“I want to go to dinner,” she pouts. “You three have never thought to take me out to dinner all this time, and I’m a woman. I want to be wined and dined.”

“What?!” Logan gapes at her. “We wine and dine you every night. Not outside, but in here, you’re our queen! And we treat you like one!”

“I want to be your queen outside, too.”

“Is that what you want? For us to take you to dinner?” Orion asks.

“Yes,” she says. “I’d like that.”

“You know we said until we deal with everything that’s a potential danger to you, you won’t be leaving the tower, right?” Orion starts. “And you know that in the last few weeks we’ve had people, Slavs in particular, trying to get to you here, yeah? That damn sister of yours just doesn’t give up!”

Orion’s referring to the few occasions when the Slavs tried to take Maisy back. Lucky for us we were ready, and expecting them.

“Yes, I know, but–”

“There’s no but. You’re not going to dinner. At least, not with Christopher Miller.”

Orion responds to Christopher’s text, then reads it out loud. “Thank you for the offer, but I’m going to decline. Maisy.”

I honestly don’t get why they don’t want me to meet Christopher. I don’t think he wants to fuck me. What he’s doing is too important for him to mess up our relationship.

MAISY

I usually spend my mornings on the roof deck in my panties and cami top. I have privacy plus all the space I need, and I’m free. When I came up here on my own for the first time, it was hilarious. That morning, the boys woke up and panicked, thinking I was gone. But soon, they learned: if I’m not down there, I’m here.

This morning, though, I know the three of them were awake as I left. For the first time since I’ve been with them, I rejected their advances.

I really wanted to go to the dinner Christopher invited me to. And I’m upset. Mostly about the way they told me no. I’ve been cooped up here, and yes, I know it’s for my own safety, but once in a blue moon, I’d love to go out. And this was a perfect opportunity.

True, perhaps I’ve been lulled into a false sense of safety, but still, I wish they’d say they’ll take me out to dinner after all this is over.

I want to be paraded as theirs. I want to show them off as mine. I want… I just want to be free, and go out like a normal person.

I sigh and tilt my head back to look up at the sky. It soothes me. The sun, the fresh air, the clear blue sky, everything seems perfect.

Suddenly, the ping of a message sounds from somewhere. I look around; nobody else is on the roof deck. On the table, under the shade, is a cell phone. One of the boys must have left theirs here, or maybe… I stand up to grab it. This is my cell. Well, they got it for me, but I don’t really need it. Who am I going to call, anyway? Rosey? She showed me her true colors when she sent her people to take me. I still don’t get her. There must be something that I’m not seeing, because to have her turn against me like that, her own sister, is outrageous – and heartbreaking. All this can’t just be over power.

I flip the cell over, and there on the screen is a message from Christopher. It wouldn’t hurt if I read it. It’s my cell, after all.

“Your sister, Rosey, contacted me. She wants to relocate. And she wants you to meet her children before she goes. Let me know what you want to do.”

Rosey? She wants to relocate? How did she find out about this?

“Are you texting someone?”

Orion’s voice startles me; I let out a shriek and the cell slips from my hand.

“Orion! You scared me!” I spin around to face him. He’s naked bar his boxer shorts and his hair’s disheveled. He must have just got out of bed.

He picks up the cell from the floor. “As far as I remember, you got no one to text or call.” He eyes me suspiciously. “Right?”

“I got a message from Christopher,” I say, and hold my breath.

He checks the cell. “Did you respond?”

“I was gonna.”

Orion looks over the message and judging by his face, particularly his big frown, he’s not happy. “Please tell me you didn’t consider it. Tell me you saw it’s a trap!”
