“Stupid men. There’s no need to wait for your period. The moment the implant’s out, you can get pregnant. But thank fuck they had no idea. Let me deal with your arm now.” I approach her wound with my tweezers. “Mm-hmm, it’s definitely your implant. Don’t move.” I know I need to be quick because it will hurt like hell. The infection is looking nasty.
I pinch the tiny remainder of the implant with my tweezers and extract it quickly, just before she screams and pushes me away.
“Logan, what the fuck are you doing to her?!” Orion shoots to his feet, ready to fight for her as she jumps into Kai’s lap, crying.
“I had to take it out. It’s infected.”
“Then be gentle!” he growls. “Maisy? You okay?”
She nods. “It hurts. Like there’s fire under my skin.”
“I gotta sterilize it now,” I warn. “That’ll hurt like hell too.”
She starts sobbing again, but this time offers her arm to me.
“I’ll be as fast as I can, I promise.” I pour pure alcohol over the wound, making sure it gets everywhere it needs to as her sobs rapidly become loud wails.
“That’s it. I’m done. It’s over now,” I say as I put a large bandage on it.
She burrows into Kai’s arms as he wipes her tears. “It’s okay, Maisy,” he whispers.
The four of us stay silent for a while, unsure of where and how to proceed from here. Maisy’s somehow with us again, and we didn’t even have to take a bullet to make it happen. She just came to us. Luck? I hope it is.
Orion’s the one to break the silence. “Maisy, tell us what happened to you?”
She sniffles. “The man who shot you took me to Rosey’s. After she paid him, she threw me in a filthy cell in the basement.”
“Don’t worry, he got what he deserved. Greedy fucking asshole!” I murmur.
“They were taking me to the doctor’s today. When I saw Vitali Tower, I jumped out of the car.” She shrugs. “I took my chance.”
Kai tightens his embrace and slowly strokes her hair as she cuddles into his chest. Fuck, what I wouldn’t give to be in his place. Maisy is the oxygen coursing through my veins.
I pick up the bottle from the table and fill our glasses with whiskey.
“Can I have a glass?” Maisy asks quietly.
Orion and I share a glance.
“You drink whiskey?” Kai asks.
“I don’t want it. I need it. Something to cleanse the bitter taste from my mouth. And calm my soul. I’ve been alone all this time.”
I pull out a fresh glass and fill it for Maisy. She picks it up, salutes us as we raise our glasses, and all of us down our shots.
“Um, Logan, when I last saw you…” She turns to me, looking bolder than before. “Was that true, what the man said? Were you gonna hand me over after our last time together?”
“No!” I say.
“Fuck no, Maisy,” Orion growls.
“Then… were you not gonna come get me?” she asks, looking between all three of us.
“We would have. You know we would.” Kai rushes to respond like a teenager in love. Not that all of us aren’t, but she needs assurance, not desperation. Plus, he doesn’t know that we did try to get her back.
“Maisy, sweetheart, we tried. Orion and I planned, sent our men, but they couldn’t penetrate the Slavs HQ. And with us still recuperating, it was an impossible feat.” I say. “We only just got Kai back today, for the first time in two months.”
“You did?” Her brows crook. “Where were you, Kai?”
