“Logan!” I scream, and try to run to him, but I’m caught by the man in black.

“Got ya!”

“Let me go, let me go, aaaarrgggggh!” I kick and punch and writhe, to no avail. He has me tight in his clutches.

“I ain’t gonna kill you, sweetie, even though Logan paid me to.”

“Let her go… Don’t you dare touch her,” Logan gasps. He’s lying next to Orion, a dark, bloody patch growing bigger on his shirt. He’s been hit in the stomach.

“Maisy, darling, look at me. Look…” Orion sounds like he’s on his last breath.

They were going to kill me, but still, I never wanted them to die. I don’t want them to die. They’re my… everything.

Our eyes meet and it’s his abyss that’s calming me, taking me deeper, but do I want to go there? With the room in darkness, I may be imagining things.

“Slav or not. We don’t care. You’re ours…”

I want to believe him, and I wait for more words to come, but there are none. He blacks out. Logan is lying next to him, his eyes closed.

“Noooo! No! Orion! Wake up! Logan!” I sob as the man handcuffs my wrists behind my back.

“There you go, sweetie. See? Easy.” The mere sound of his voice is repulsive.

“Let me go. Orion! Logan! No! I won’t go to the Slavs!” I cry desperately. “Kill me right now! Kill me, please!”

“Kill you? Of course I won’t kill you. I’m not that stupid.” He drags me with him while I try to wrench myself free.

CHAPTER 5

MAISY

My head pounds as I try to move, but I’m restrained. Where am I? What’s going on? My lids are heavy. Everything is distorted and blurry, and dark. I’m lying on a cold floor… in a basement that smells all too familiar. My hands and legs are tied, my mouth taped. I scream through the tape, but nothing comes out but a muffled sound.

“You’re finally home, sister.”

Foreboding words spoken by someone who should be looking out for me. Only a real lunatic would imprison her own sister.

I can’t make Rosey out in the shadows around me. I squint, hoping to get a better look. I pull on my restraints forcefully. I want out of here.

She bursts into hysterical laughter, then grasps my hair with force, yanking my head back. Her laughter is a whisper in my ear. “Oh, the fun they’re gonna have with you. You see, I was pliable. But you, you’re wild. The Slavs prefer the wild ones.”

I haven’t felt so much hatred toward a living soul ever. Except for Milan. I’m sick to my stomach. A flashback of Orion’s and Logan’s dead bodies brings a crushing pain to my chest, and with my chin wobbling, small whimpers come out of me, which turn into sobs when, finally, I give in. Kai won’t be able to save me on his own, but I know he’ll try. Which means he’ll die too.

From now on, this is going to be my life.

No one will be looking for me. I’m as good as dead. And I’d be better off dead.

I hear the heavy metal door of the cell screeching open. Rosey leaves me, three men following her. The key turns in her hand and the sound of the lock resonates in the basement.

“Rosey, please, don’t lock me up,” I plead, my voice trembling. “I’m your sister.”

“Why are you locking the door?” one of the men asks her. “Everyone’s coming here after dinner.”

Paranoia hits me. I don’t want to be stuck in here. “Rosey, please! I’ll do anything!”

She continues to ignore me. “No one’s gonna touch her until we take out her contraceptive implant. Only then will we be certain she can make us babies,” she tells the man.

One of the others objects loudly as they walk away. “What? That wasn’t the deal! Who cares if she can make babies? Let’s test her first.”
