“Don’t bother being heroic,” he says to me. “I don’t need those trade routes from La Rosa all that badly.”

“I’ll keep that in mind,” I reply, my tone dry. “Where’s my son?”

“Be patient,” he says to me, sounding bored. He checks something on his phone, then looks up. I follow his gaze to see Grazia bringing Mateo with her toward the car.

My heart pinches in my chest at the sight of my child happily chatting with a member of the Baldini family. I wanted to protect him from all of this. I failed.

“Is my mama in the car?” Mateo says to Grazia.

“She is!” Grazia says, her tone sweet. She opens the car door, and points at me. I manage to force a smile onto my face. I hope that Mateo can’t tell how scared I am.

“Mama!” he cries, hopping into the car and joyfully looking up at me. “Grazia says that we are going on an adventure!”

“She’s right,” I reply, hoping my voice sounds somewhat normal to him. “Tell Grazia goodbye.”

“Adiós!” he waves to Grazia as she closes the car door. I watch her walk away from the car without looking back. I curse her in my mind for a traitor, my eyes narrowed on her tiny frame shrouded in layers of white lace and silk.

“Time to go,” Enzo says to his driver.

“Where are we going?” my son asks happily, looking all around him. I’m not sure if he expected to see other kids in the car or if Grazia promised him something specific about the trip that she told him he was about to leave on.

Either way, there’s not much that I can tell him since no one has shared anything with me about what the plan is.

“You and your mom are going to get to visit my house. How does that sound?” Enzo says to Mateo.

“Oh good!” Mateo says happily. He claps his hands a couple of times. “Will the other kids be there?”

My chest feels tight. I know how lonely he has been, so it’s only natural that he is excited about the chance to spend time with the rest of the Baldini brood.

“They will come home in a couple of days,” Enzo says with a nod. “Do you want to go to school with them at my house for a while?”

“That sounds fun!” Mateo says, bouncing a little on the seat.

I cast a glance at Enzo, feeling grateful despite my anger at him.

If there is nothing else good that comes of this kidnapping plot, at least my child will get to spend time with other kids. “Thank you,” I mouth at him.

I know just how much weight flattery can carry with men like the Baldinis. I can’t afford to seem ungrateful for the small crumbs that are thrown my way.

Enzo nods in reply to my gratitude. He leans around me to smile at my son, and I wing a small prayer to the heavens that he and his family will keep my innocent son safe.

Chapter Seven

Elio

Kate’s skin is like silk beneath my fingers. I trace them along her ribs, skimming over the small bumps that indicate each bone beneath her flesh.

My questing touch skims up over her breasts, and I eagerly wrap my hands around them, squeezing their pliant fullness. She moans, and my cock leaps to life at the sound.

It’s been a few weeks since I have seen her and I will never admit to either of us just how much I missed her.

My father sent me away from the States for yet another round of training. He has been keeping me busy learning the ropes of the business, making sure that I understand what is required of me to keep things going once he is gone.

The training that he has laid out for me has never been easy, but recently, the demands on me have increased significantly. This time, I was sent to Russia with a team of my father’s most trusted soldiers and guards.

There’s a new sales route that we are establishing in Europe and Russia that is at the heart of the transaction process. My father had only told me that I would be asked to fully commit to my role as his heir once I arrived.

I arrogantly thought that he would just ask me to check on the drugs and the contacts who are handling them. I imagined that maybe I might have to rough up a few people or throw my weight around a little.
