“Sure.”
 
 “You’re here with someone, right?”
 
 I nodded.
 
 “Did he do that to you? Your face?” she asked, nodding faintly toward the bruises that were so conspicuous on my skin.
 
 “Oh, no. This is a…work injury,” I said.
 
 Fawn frowned, and one glance at Lily and then Esther showed they did the same.
 
 “I know it sounds like crap, but it’s not,” I said.
 
 “So he doesn’t…hit you?” Lily said.
 
 “Ioan?” I said, frowning. The thought hadn’t ever even crossed my mind, and even as I tried, I couldn’t imagine it.
 
 “Wait, you came with Ioan?” Fawn said.
 
 I nodded, not sure whether I should say anything, but when she smiled, I relaxed again.
 
 “Good. Then we don’t have to worry. He’ll take care of you,” she said.
 
 I believed her.
