Page 22 of Stay with Me

“How did you know I was still at work?”

I grin at her. “Your sister told me.”

She gasps. “Is that why she kept texting me?”

“I plead the fifth.”

Folding her arms over her chest, she glares at me. “I’ll be having a talk with her. Where’s the loyalty?”

“Sometimes the people around you know what’s best for you before you do.”

“And you’re what’s best for me, Detective Moran?”

I just barely hold myself back from flinching. That name is a double-edged sword at the moment. Instead of answering her question, I get up and hold my hand out.

“Let’s get you your earrings.”

CHAPTER 9

Elevation

Reminisce

“Come upstairs with me. It’ll only take a minute,” Knight says as he takes off his helmet.

I nod and climb off the bike to follow him. It’s only as I start to move my feet that I think better of going up with him. It’s too late now. He has his hand on the small of my back, leading me to the elevator.

My mind has been playing tug of war since we finished dinner and he asked that question. Would I be with Knight if it hadn’t been for that case? Yet that case is what put us in each other’s paths.

My life was on the line from the moment it landed on my desk. I was so sheltered and naïve. Bad guys were only on TV until I took that job, and still, I hadn’t taken that seriously.

I thought I was invincible until I came face to face with death. It wasn’t a Hollywood movie anymore when my life was threatened and the attempt was almost successful. Talk about scared straight.

I tucked my tail and ran. I sure did have my dad pull every string he could to help me start my practice as an IP lawyer. The elevator stops between floors pulling me out of my thoughts.

I look at Knight as he steps away from the panel. He stalks toward me until I’m cornered against the metal wall.

“Wh … what are you doing?” I breathe.

He places one hand on my waist and the other one he cups the side of my neck with. Slowly, he drags his thumb from my chin to the base of my throat. I shiver from his touch.

The way he licks his lips and those blue eyes sparkle, it’s clear he knows exactly how that hold affects me. He moves so close; I can feel his erection as he grows in his jeans.

“You said this elevator was on your list,” he says huskily.

It takes a moment before his words click through the fog that’s started in my brain. I release a short breathless laugh. I shake my head and push at his chest.

“That’s not happening,” I scoff.

He leans in close until his lips are a breath away from mine. “Tell me you don’t feel that. You make my body buzz with need for you. Are you really going to deny what I can do for you?”

He moves his hand on my waist up over my ribs. I nearly whimper. It’s been so long, and I know for a fact he will knock the dust off this pussy, but that’s the problem. If I allow Knight to touch me, there’s no telling where things will take us.

You don’t just take one hit of Knight. I’ll be calling him all week for seconds, thirds, shit, he’ll be on speed dial for at least a month. My pussy is drooling for him already, like I asked her for her opinion.

“I came for my earrings.”

He snorts, his breath fanning my lips. “Maybe, but before you leave, you’re coming for me.”
