My heart sinks. She can never be happy. Why can’t she just be a normal mom for once, just once in my entire life? Is that too much to ask?

“She will eat whatever the fuck she wants,” Jax says, sitting back in his chair. He takes my hand in his and rests it on the table, getting my mom’s attention from the food.

“So, is this a serious thing?” She asks as she starts to put food on her plate.

“Yes, it is serious,” I say with pride.

“That is too bad,” She says back, not looking at me.

“Why?” I ask, but I already regret asking the question.

“Because honey, you need to stay available for your future husband, and you can’t do that if you are with him,” she says, looking from me to Jax and then back to me. I can’t believe she just said that.

“I am her future husband,” Jax confirms, making my heart race with his confession.

My mom chuckles as she sits back in her seat.

“I will never let that happen; look at what you have done to my daughter. She is dressed like a slut.” She snaps.

My entire body stiffens from the words she uses, the words that Chad uses.

“Careful, you are her mother, but I will throw your fucking ass out of our house,” Jax warns her, and I believe him, and she should as well.

“Our house,” she asks in a confused voice.

“Yes, you heard me,” Jax says as he grabs his cup and takes a big gulp of the wine, I think we are all going to need something stronger.

“Liliana, this can’t be that serious,” She says, trying to get me to agree with her, but I am not going to lie.

“It is, “ I say nodding.

She shakes her head “Why did I come here if you are not going to listen to me”

“That is a very good question. Why did you come here? To talk down to your daughter, to make her feel like shit,” Jax says through gritted teeth.

“I am helping her; don't make me the bad guy,” my mom says, trying to play the victim. She does this very well, and I normally fall for it, but not this time.

“You are,” Jax says calmly.

My mom looks at me, and I don't say a word. There is nothing for me to say, so I do the only thing I can: I motion for her to leave.

“If I walk out that door, Liliana, we are done; you are cut off,” she snaps at me.

“Don't worry, I can take care of her,” Jax snaps.

My mom stands up and looks down at me “I am so disappointed that you are my daughter”

I don't say a damn word, she turns and it’s the dining room, that lasted a lot longer than I thought it would.

She wasted her time coming here, but she is my mother, and I wanted to try to include her in my new life. Now I see she doesn’t want me to have a new life; she just wants me to have the life she wants me to have.

“Darlin,” Jax says, getting my attention back to him where it belongs.

I turn and look at Jax. He leans in, resting his forehead against mine. “I got you,” He promises.

A tear rolls down my cheek as I take in a deep breath.

My mother will never let me be happy. She will never understand what Jax and I have, and if it really comes down to choosing between her and Jax, I choose him—I choose him over anything and everyone.
