“I can only handle one conversation about the two of you in a day.”
I grab his wrist and try to pull him to his feet. “Come on, Jake. You’ll have to talk to him eventually. You may as well do it now. Please, he just seems so sad these days.”
Jake rolls his eyes but gets to his feet and follows me to the door. He makes a show of taking his time to find his wallet and pull on his shoes.
As soon as he’s ready to go, we get in my car, and I prepare for the most awkward drive of my life.
Even with the music playing, there is still an uneasiness filling the car.
I know Jake and I will be fine, but I don’t know how the conversation with Griffin will go.
Jake tenses when we get to Griffin’s house. I get out of the car first, waiting for Jake to find his balls and follow me.
Griffin appears in the hallway when I open the door. “I wasn’t expecting you to be home this soon...”
Jake walks in, cutting off Griffin. “Hey man.”
Griffin’s eyes widen as he looks between me and Jake. “Hey, I didn’t think you would drop by.”
“Well, apparently we have some things we need to hash out.” Jake’s tone is stern, and his glare is icy.
I jam an elbow into Jake’s side. “Jake has been thinking…about us.”
Jake glowers at me before glancing at Griffin. “I’m sorry for what I said and how I reacted. It was a lot to handle, and I was acting like an ass. Hell, it’s still a lot to handle.”
Griffin nods. “I probably would have reacted the same way if I were you.”
Jake slaps him on the shoulder. “I wanted to tell you that if you and Cora are happy together, then I’m happy for you. I just need some time to…adjust.”
I watch as they move into Griffin’s office den to talk. It’s not long before their laughter echoes through the house as I head to the kitchen and crack open my laptop.
As my brother and Griffin waste the night away, I work on drafting plans for my own business one day.
The plan will be better than before, tailored to what I want to do with my life instead of what a man thinks I should do.
I glance at the calendar, trying to figure out the exact date I’ll have all the debt paid off.
The front door slams as I’m running through calculations in a spreadsheet.
Griffin’s arms wrap around my waist. “Jake got a cab ride home.”
I lean back into Griffin’s chest, tilting my head back to look up at him. “How did it go?”
“It was good. He seems to be coming around to the idea of us together.”
“I knew he would eventually.” I yawn as Griffin kisses my temple. “Am I ever going to meet your family? As your wife or girlfriend or whatever we want the story to be.”
Griffin makes a strangled sound in the back of his throat as he pulls away from me. “Do you want to meet them?”
“Isn’t that what you do when two people get married?” I spin around to face him, seeing the worry flash across his face. “We don’t have to if you think it’s going to be that horrible.”
“It’s not that I don’t want to introduce you to my family and show you off—because I do—but my family is… difficult. I don’t want them to scare you off.”
I hook one leg around his hip and pull him toward me until he’s standing between my legs. “There’s nothing anyone could do to scare me away now.”
The worried expression he gives me right before our lips meet makes me wonder if I’ve just set myself up for some serious regret.
