Fuck. I knew it. Decebal had tried to get a ping on her phone and got nothing, but it wasn’t a guarantee with her devices, so we hadn’t been sure.
“You tricked Ransom into slipping out of my tracker—with Mord Sato on your heels like a hound.”
“Yes,” she said.
“And you won’t tell me where you went?”
I could command her to, but there was a stubbornness in her eyes that told me she didn’t care how much pain the dark bond would put her through.
In fact, she stepped back, tugging from my grip. She hurried to the table and carefully set her bag down, then crossed to the couch.
My eyebrows shot up as she straightened her skirt, and with about as much dignity as the motion allowed, lowered her torso over the arm of the couch, pressing her cheek to the cushion, back arched.
I pinched the bridge of my nose while Ransom let out a breath that might have been amused.
When I crossed toward her, my gaze fighting the gravitational pull of her sweet ass as she presented like an omega in heat, it was to find one defiant golden eye fixed on me.
Fuck.
I knew to my bones that whatever she’d done today was not something she planned on letting come from her mouth. I was equal parts annoyed and impressed. Or turned on. I wasn’t sure.
“Why?” I asked as I stepped up behind her, feeling her shiver as I ran my knuckle along her bare flesh.
“I’m…” she trailed off. “I’m your omega. It’s my job to protect my pack, no matter what that means.”
I saw Ransom frown.
Where the hell had she gone? I’d already realised today that I’d underestimated her. By a lot. I wouldn’t do so again.
“And in this case, that means not telling your pack lead?” I asked.
“Y-yes.”
“And I suppose Roxy won’t be spilling.”
“I made her pinky swear.”
“And whatever you did today, might it put you in danger?”
She went still, clearly considering that. “N-not more danger than I’m already in.”
I frowned. I didn’t believe her. If that was the truth, then she wouldn’t have snuck away and she wouldn’t be refusing to tell us.
But I wasn’t willing to hurt her, not when I didn’t think she would cave to a dark bond command, anyway.
It would be fine. I had my own plans with Decebal. Whatever it was she thought she was doing, she wouldn’t get there.
I would fix this before she could.
And if she thought this was all I’d be doing to discover where she’d been today, she was sorely wrong.
So instead, I stepped back and sank onto the couch. “Come here.”
She pushed herself up, and I almost laughed at the little flash of disappointment in her eyes as Ransom dropped down at my side. His face was still drained of colour, and he looked about as shell-shocked as I felt.
Shatter circled the arm of the couch and sank down on my lap, pretty eyes holding mine. I just tugged her against my chest. She might be the reason my heart was racing in the first place, but she was also the only thing that would slow it. I drew my jaw along her temple because… well, because scent marking her seemed like the natural thing to do right now. “Don’t ever do that again,” I whispered.
She didn’t reply, just squeezed me tighter.
