I broke the kiss and stared down at her. Her eyes were closed in ecstasy, teeth buried in her bottom lip as she clung to me.

“Chloe.”

Those beautiful blue orbs blinked open and met mine, and in the depths I read every emotion that roiled inside me. Desire. Love. Devotion. My cock swelled as I stroked in and out. “I love you.”

Her lips parted, and her eyes went wide with surprise. “I...”

“Shhh.” I dipped my head and kissed her into silence. “I just wanted you to know. I will always take care of you. I will always love you.”

Her walls contracted around me and her nails bit into my shoulders as she came, flooding my cock with her wet heat. I followed seconds later, pulsing deep inside her body. My legs shook from the effort, and I pulled out of her then lowered her to her feet. Her arms tightened around my neck as she stared up at me.

“I've never told anyone I love them before,” she admitted.

“You don't—”

With a shake of her head, she cut me off. “You're the only person who's ever truly seen me, who's ever cared about me. I think I fell for you the second you walked into the coffee shop.”

Heat spread through my chest and I pulled her in for a long kiss. The water eventually turned cold, and I flicked it off before drying both of us. We dressed in companionable silence then headed to the kitchen. Chloe slumped into a chair at the kitchen table and I studied her. I was worried about her, even though I knew she'd bounce back. All I could do was be here for her, help her through.

“I hate it here,” she whispered.

All night long, fury and concern had plagued me. I'd thought about the episode at the restaurant, thought about how I wanted to whisk her away to someplace she'd never have to deal with it again. An idea that had lain dormant for the past couple of days flickered to life.

“Do you really feel that way?” Now that she was thinking with a clear mind, I wanted to know exactly where she stood.

She nodded, looking incredibly forlorn. “I never want to see another reporter as long as I live.”

The reporter was an asshole, but so were the supposed friends who’d treated her poorly after the attack. “Chloe.” I took a chair next to her and turned her slightly so I could see her better. “If you could do anything in the world, what would it be?”

She lifted one shoulder, avoiding my gaze. “I don't know.” She sighed. “I'm just tired of being reminded about it constantly.”

I could understand that. “Have you ever been to Texas?”

Her blue eyes lifted to mine, and she tipped her head to one side. “Texas?”

I nodded. I knew it was crazy, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought it would be good for both of us. I hated my job, and Connor Quentin's offer was sounding better by the minute. I didn't know if he would still have a spot open, but it was worth a shot.

“There's a job offer in Texas. I never said anything about it before, but if you're open to going and at least checking it out…” I trailed off and she stared at me for nearly a full minute before nodding.

“I think it’s worth a shot.”

I kissed her lightly, then grabbed up my phone and pulled up the email from a couple weeks back. I asked Con if the position was still available and told him that we would be interested in visiting. Less than five minutes later, my phone dinged with an alert, and my heart raced with anticipation as I pulled up his response.

A slow smile spread across my face as I turned to Chloe. “How soon can you pack?”

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

JASON

It didn't take much for Chloe and me to get a long weekend off work, and a week later I found myself in Con’s office at Quentin Security. During the past forty minutes or so, he’d shown me around the facility, and we’d discussed job description, pay, and other expectations. Although the building was still in various phases of renovation, it was all coming together well. I told him about Chloe and her abduction, and the possibility of moving down here for a fresh start.

Con laced his fingers together over his abdomen as he leaned back in the chair. “Blake Lawson just started an assignment at a local healthplex. His charge is a psychologist. I’ve heard she’s very good if Chloe would like to speak with someone.”

“I’ll pass that on to her, thank you.” I jumped right to the heart of the matter. “What do I need to do? Do you have an application for me to fill out?”

He gave an abbreviated shake of his head. “If you want it, the position is yours.”

I should've been surprised, but I wasn't. Doubtless, Con knew everything about me before I even stepped foot in the door. I wanted to jump at the opportunity, but I had to make sure Chloe was okay with the change too. We'd spent yesterday exploring Dallas and so far she'd seemed to enjoy it.
