“I won’t hurt her. I swear it, all right?”
“I’ll hold you to it.”
“I don’t doubt it, little brother.”
I shifted my weight. “Are you and Sky… what’s going on there?”
His eyes shot wide. “I would never—I know she’s yours. I wouldn’t—”
“I wasn’t even thinking that. But thanks for the nightmares.”
He chuckled. “No, we’re friends. Almost friends, maybe. King has been pushing her away and without you and Cal here, she was pretty much all alone. I was too. So we kind of came together, grew closer. When King interrogated me about it, I described it as a big brother-little sister dynamic.”
“Huh.”
“Does it bother you?”
I shook my head. “No. I was just worried about the Cas pulling away part. But you and her becoming friends, it’s a good thing.”
“Because her with me was a major obstacle for you and me to get back on track, right? After the fight club.” He winced. “What I did that night… fuck, I’m sorry, Seb. It was beyond fucked-up. I’ve apologized to Skylar—a lot. But I realized I never really did to you.”
“If she’s accepted it, so will I.”
“Yeah?”
“We’ve had enough bad blood to last a lifetime. I mean, it’s going to be a work in progress with us trying to rebuild, Damien, but I’m willing to try now.”
He smiled. “That’s all I wanted. And I promise, I won’t make you regret it.”
“Come here,” I said, holding out my arm.
Shocked, he hesitated.
“Really,” I assured him.
He shifted closer to me and I wrapped my free arm around him.
And then he was throwing both of his around me, holding me tightly to him.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” he uttered brokenly into my shoulder.
“I know. I know you are.”

“That’s not viable intel, Jace. No deal. Dig deeper and give me something concrete.”
I hung up and grunted.
That slimy fuck wanted something for basically nothing. He was trying to use my desperation to find Caleb to his advantage. The hell I would allow that to happen. I’d already come far too close to considering Elijah’s demand for King.
Fortunately, I’d had help from a certain someone with veering off that path.
Not just in that aspect either.
Since I’d brought Asher in, he’d been there every step of the way. Not just on-mission either. For me. He’d actually been there for me. He’d had my back. And, unlike everybody else around me right now, he saw things my way.
