She climbs into the back and makes herself comfortable. “Right, let's do this.” I can hear the nerves in her voice, but she wants to get as far away from here as possible. And she’s not the only one.
The snow is coming down really hard. Ramsey is driving the first part and then I’ll take over when he gets tired. If you’ve ever driven in snow, you will know that it’s hypnotic and even if you’re not tired, then you’ll start to feel it. The snow comes at the car, and you can’t see more than a few feet in front of you, which is not a good feeling when you drive over the mountain in the middle of a fucking snowstorm.
We are still making our assent; the snow is getting deeper and faster. “Everything okay in the back there, Meg?”
“Yes, Cash. Are you sure you can see the road, Ramsey?”
He chuckles. “Yes, sweetheart I can. We’re driving slowly, but we are getting to the top soon. Then it should be much easier going down the mountain.”
She looks out the window, deep in thought.
“Hey, Ramsey. Do you want to stop for a coffee or something. Give your eyes a break.” It takes a lot out of you driving in these conditions.
“Yeah, sounds good.” He drives for another ten minutes or so and then pulls over at the side of the road. We haven’t come across any other traffic so we should be good for a short while.
Meg pours us both a cup of coffee and hands it over to us. She sips her own coffee and looks deep in thought.
“Did you really get one of the prospects to break down your bedroom wall?” Looking in the rear-view mirror, I see her eyes wide open.
“Yes, baby we did. We told you; you are on lockdown until we find that fucker and kill him.” She doesn’t even flinch when we say we are going to kill Ricky. She knows this world and she’s accepting of it.
“So, erm.” She bites her bottom lip. “What happens when you find him? Does that mean I can go home?”
I growl and Ramsey smiles at me. “Baby, your home is with us. We ain’t letting you go even after we find him and kill him. You’re ours.”
“So, I can move in with you both?” Her eyes seek mine in the mirror.
When they meet, I say, “Baby. Meg. Rosie is already over at yours getting some of your stuff. You can grab the rest when we come out of lockdown. You ain’t going anywhere.”
She smiles and it goes all the way to her eyes. “Love you both. I know you’re going to want to change your mind after a few days, but I’m willing to take that chance.”
“No one or nothing is going to change our minds.” Ramsey growls too and it’s my time to smirk. “Why would we want to not have you in our bed every night and every morning? That doesn’t make sense.”
She smiles at both of us in the mirror. “Well then we’d better get home quick.”
We both laugh. She’s impatient.
Chapter 10
Meghan
We’ve been driving for about six hours. It’s taking a long time to get to the top of the mountain. It has been treacherous, and I know that Ramsey is getting tired. “Why don’t you swap for a while? Ramsey it must be hard to concentrate that much.”
“Yes, good idea. I’ll pull in up ahead.”
As he turns to pull into a layby, the back wheels spin and we come to a dead stop.
“Fuck.”
Cash is out of the car quick and sees that the wheel is stuck in a ditch. “Ramsey, we need to push this out of here before we can go anywhere. Meg, can you jump in the front, and we can push the car.”
Ramsey gets out and I climb in to the front. “Turn it on.” I do. I can hear the wheel spinning. It takes another half an hour of pushing and rocking the truck before we get it out of the ditch.
We stop and have more coffee and then the guys swap, so now Cash is driving.
About an hour later, I look out and it’s getting dark. “Hey, do we need to stop somewhere and sleep. It’s getting dark and I know that driving is going to be horrendous.”
Ramsey and Cash look at each other. “I’d prefer to keep going.” Cash turns to look at me. “It will be really cold if we go to sleep. We’ll have to keep the heater on and that will use our gas, which we need to get down off this fucking mountain.”
