After dinner, we put Emilia to bed before gathering on the couch for our now-regular movie night.

I reached for one of the multiple Creamsicles I had brought inside with me. I handed one to Jaxson and kept one for myself, both of us enjoying the cool, refreshing treat.

“Here’s to being right,” he said with a wink.

I laughed, taking a bite of the cold, sweet treat. “Cheers to that.”

As the movie played and the night grew darker, I thought about my life. My arm was around Jaxson, Emilia upstairs, sound asleep. It wasn’t perfect, but it was ours.

As I savored the last bite of my ice cream, I said another prayer that I didn’t lose this.

Chapter 16

Jaxson

Iwas super happy that Rhys was pregnant. Even though the original secret remained between us, I know that whatever it was, it couldn’t be that bad. Right now, I was just overjoyed at the thought of becoming a dad again. But this time, I’d have a partner to share all that with. And an extended family to help out.

Sitting on the porch, the morning sun casting a warm glow over the garden, I found myself lost in thoughts of the future. The sound of birds chirping blended harmoniously with the gentle breeze rustling through the trees. It was a perfect moment, a moment filled with hope and promise.

Leanne and Jayson would always be in my thoughts, their memory a constant source of strength and gratitude. They gave me this beautiful life, Emilia, and even Rhys, if I’m being honest. I probably wouldn’t have met him if they hadn’t insisted I move out here.

I glanced inside the house, where Rhys was bustling around the kitchen, a look of concentration on his face as he made breakfast. The sight filled me with a level of happiness I couldn’t quite describe. It felt like this baby tied Rhys to me forever, no matter what happened. It was a bond that nothing could break.

The secret he had didn’t worry me as much as it intrigued me. Still, I couldn’t even begin to imagine what Rhys was keeping from me. Did he set his high school on fire? That would be an interesting story.

Was he secretly a drug dealer? I couldn’t help but laugh and snort at the idea. It was so far-fetched. I knew my Rhys would never even consider it.

What could it possibly be? The curiosity gnawed at me, but it didn’t overshadow the happiness of the present moment. I looked at Rhys and saw our future, one filled with laughter and love, and I knew that whatever came our way, things would be okay.

Rhys stepped out onto the porch, two steaming mugs in hand. He handed me one, and I caught the scent of fresh coffee mingling with the morning air. “Thanks,” I said, taking a sip. The warmth of the drink spread through me, matching the feelings in my heart.

“You’re awfully quiet this morning,” Rhys observed, sitting down beside me. “What’s on your mind?”

I smiled, reaching out to take his free hand. “Just thinking about how lucky I am,” I replied honestly. “And how excited I am for our future.”

Rhys’ eyes softened, and he leaned in to kiss my cheek. “I feel the same way. We’re going to be amazing parents.”

I squeezed his hand, feeling another rush of affection. “We already are. And this little one is just going to make our family even more special.”

We sat in comfortable silence for a while, enjoying the tranquillity of the morning. Our future felt bright and full of endless possibilities. Our love was stronger than any secret, and together, we could face anything.

The morning sunlight enveloped and filled me with a peaceful happiness. Having Rhys by my side brought me a sense of comfort that I never knew I needed until this moment. Holding his hand in mine was a reminder to me of the new life we were building.

As we sat there, basking in the glow of the morning sun, I felt a surge of emotions welling up inside me. A mix of anticipation and apprehension, curiosity and contentment. Even though the mystery of Rhys’ secret still lingered at the back of my mind, but it no longer loomed over us like a shadow.

We would be fine, whatever it was... right?

Chapter 17

Rhys

Icouldn’t believe I’d agreed to this family dinner.

As we pulled to a stop in front of Gabe’s house, every part of me wanted to cancel. Yeah, because that wouldn’t be weird.

After Gabe and Hunter showed up at the house, they sort of forced my hand. My brother had mentioned one day after at work that Jaxson might think I was hiding him and Emilia since I’d never brought them around to meet anyone. Gabe wasn’t one to butt in for no reason, which meant my mate had said something that made my brother feel like he needed to step in and give me a heads up.

Still, my brain was filled with all the many ways this could go wrong. And I said a prayer to Urs to just help me get through this dinner without incident.
