I can’t help but laugh at him, and at the pain in his features, from having come out here to dance with me. “Let me save you.” I take my hand off his shoulder and lead him off the dancefloor to his family.
I head straight into the waiting arms of Summer. “You have no idea how fucking happy I am to see you.” I squeeze her so tight, I think I might break a rib.
Her arms wrap around me and she reciprocates the squeezing. “You look so beautiful,” she whispers into my ear.
I let go of her and take in her beauty, dressed in a black floor-length tight dress, one with a slit to make every man in this room stand at attention. “Like you can talk.”
“How is it all going?” She nudges my arm.
“Fucking great. What more can I say?” I laugh, but the humor doesn’t reach my eyes. “Is it just the four of you?” I look into the crowd for Amber.
“No, Amber is hitting up the dancefloor with your brother.” Summer points towards the front of the room.
“Well, that’s interesting.” I watch the two of them twirling and laughing like they’re childhood friends. Amber is wearing a stunning red dress that shows off her curves.
“Don’t even fucking think it,” Enzo snaps, cutting me off.
“Do you ever smile?” I tease him.
He sneers at me, showing me his row of perfect teeth. “Nope.”
“So, how did you all get past security?”
“Milan invited us.” Summer’s eyes dart from me to Luca and back.
“Did he?” I search the room for him, spotting him scowling at his phone screen, and wonder what else I don’t know about tonight.
“Babe,” Summer’s melodic voice interrupts my staring at Milan. “We’re going to go. Are you okay to stay?” She touches my arm in reassurance.
“I’m okay. I’ll go home, grab a car, and be back in Providence tomorrow.” I smile at her. “I fucking love you.” I pull her into me and hug her tightly.
“I love you. Text me,” she whispers in my ear before she is getting pulled away by Enzo.
Dante has got Amber and Mason’s attention, and I watch the two of them, giddily happy, nearly skip towards me.
“Oh, Maya,” Amber throws her small frame at me and I catch her. “I’m still so sorry you’re being put through this shit.” She rights herself and her eyes are almost glassy.
“Jesus, you’d think you’re on death row,” Mason chuckles.
“I may as well be.” I flip him the finger. He wouldn’t understand the feeling of having your choices ripped out from under you.
“Is that how you feel?” drawls a deep voice.
I turn around and he’s so fucking close to me. How did I not notice him approach?
My heart thuds in my chest, my usual bitchy tendencies unable to form a coherent thought, let alone a fucking sentence right now. I slice my eyes to Luca, but he stands casually with his hands in his pockets, unaffected by the sudden appearance of the very man who can tear everything to shreds and ruin both our lives.
“I think we’re going to go, too.” Amber offers me a weak smile.
“I’ll see you tomorrow.” I kiss her on each cheek. “Bye guys.” I wave them off.
Luca hovers for a second longer than the other two. His face resembles a calm and serene ocean, but behind those dark eyes lies a turbulent storm. “See you later.” He shoots a warning look at Milan before turning and following the others outside.
“Way to clear out a room.” I turn my attention back to Milan.
“One of my many talents. Usually, they leave in body bags.”
“Is that supposed to scare me?” I cock an eyebrow.
