I needed to talk to her. I had this desperate need to hear her and know that she was okay. We had all fucked up and made mistakes, and in no way did I resent her. I could tell it had been difficult for her to tell me the truth.
After throwing on some clothes, I untangled my crazy hair before I met Nathan out in the kitchen. He smiled and kissed me deeply, his hand resting on my neck.
“Good morning, pretty girl.”
“Mm, morning,” I murmured. “Eat with me?”
“It’ll have to be fast, Evie,” he whispered, glancing down at the time regretfully. “I have to meet with Damian in less than an hour, and the traffic will be crazy.”
I pouted. “It’s okay, babe,” I murmured against his lips, running my fingers through his hair. He always looked so handsome, and yet in that moment, something told me to memorize him, to memorize everything about him. The way he looked at me, the way he kissed me.
“Go,” I said. “Once you’re back home, I think I’ll be ready to talk.”
“Yeah?”
“Yes. I must start by telling you. You’re the one person I trust more than anyone else.”
“I know, Evie.” Proud, he leaned down and kissed me again, this time a bit more feverishly. “And I appreciate that more than anything.”
Though part of me wanted to believe we were going to be okay, uncertainty took over.
I couldn’t do away with that feeling.
Left alone, I tried not to dwell on my thoughts. There were many things I needed to sort out in my head before he returned, just so I could tell the full story without breaking down.
Just as I was about to sit on the sofa, however, there was a knock at the door. I rolled my eyes, thinking Nate had returned because he forgot something.
But when I opened the door, my heart dropped.
This was the feeling.
This was it.
Chapter 45
Nathan
I stared down at my phone, still waiting for Evie’s reply. Why hadn’t she answered yet?
The elevator door opened, and I sighed, both anxious and ready to get this shit over with. My only concern was Evelyn, getting back to her and making sure she was okay. Yes, I was curious to know what happened with Hannah, but what worried me the most was her upset state. The woman I loved, she was strong and brave, yet the woman I’d seen yesterday appeared destroyed.
Though that morning she seemed to be feeling better, I was still unsure about how she was really dealing with everything.
I didn’t think she was dealing at all.
It worried me to no fucking end because Evelyn was the type of person that wore her feelings on her sleeve; she never hid anything. What you saw was what you got. And yesterday…I’d gotten a heartbroken woman.
The yelling coming from the area where Derek’s room was brought me out of my thoughts. I furrowed my brows, finding Damian within a matter of seconds.
“What’s going on?” I asked, not bothering to greet him.
“He wants the hospital to release him.” He made no attempt to hide his concern. “But you’re here, and he’s been waiting to talk to you and Evelyn. Where is she?”
I glanced at my phone, hoping to see a message from her.
Nothing. “Has he talked to the police?” I asked, following behind Damian when I saw him already heading in the direction of the room.
The times I’d seen him, he always seemed composed, but in those moments, he looked stressed. It was as if the past few hours that he’d been there had been the worst of his life as well.
