Her left hand lifts as she pushes back her hair. There’s no ring on her finger. Not that it means too much, and I still don’t want to hurt her the way he hurt me.
“Sold to the Senator for two hundred and fifty thousand...”
“Yes,” Senator Hilton says as he pushes his chair out and strolls to the stage.
“What a fabulous vacation,” the emcee says. I follow the emcee’s eyes to the winner’s much younger partner. Her smile is wide as she bounces on her seat. “You’re going to love it.”
The Senator clears his throat and says, “Can I ask my son Lucas, and…” He clears his throat. “And Raine to come to the stage.”
Stanton leans into my ear and whispers, “Oh, this is going to be fun.”
“Why?” I whisper back, looking around the room and waiting for Lucas and Raine to go onto the stage.
I smile when the Senator’s partner gives a deep sigh as her body sags into the chair.
“Lucas,” the Senator repeats. This time, his firm voice exudes authority.
“He doesn’t like his father,” Stanton replies before he leans closer to me. “Do you want to go somewhere after this?”
“Where?” I ask because I could do with leaving here right now, not later.
“My place.”
I chuckle. “I don’t think so.”
He tilts his head to one side and considers me before he smirks. “I can give you the best time of your life.”
I pick up my glass and smile sweetly before I say, “No, thanks.”
“You know I’m not letting you leave me without a kiss, or you could wrap those luscious lips around my cock.”
I roar with laughter and sputter the water in my mouth.
I don’t know whether to slap his face or kiss him for making the evening fun. But despite everything, I’m still pregnant. I pat my tummy and glance downward. “And you know I’m pregnant, right? And the baby is sitting on my bladder again, which means I need to visit the ladies’ room?” It’s a lie. I know it’s not bigger than a bean. I just need to get away.
His mouth drops open for a moment before he quickly realizes. “Sorry, nobody told me.” His voice is quiet as stares at my stomach for so long it becomes uncomfortable.
“There was no need, we’re...” I start to tell him we’re only a casual date and there’s no need for him to know much about me, but just as I do, Henry stands and walks to the table I’m on, causing my heart to pound.
Our gazes clash as he reaches the table. He presses a hand on Stanton’s shoulder, and I’m readying myself for him to give me eye contact again, but he doesn’t—he turns to the stage and is followed by his girlfriend.
“Thank you, Lucas.”
I stare at the Senator.
Lucas?
His name is Lucas, and his father is Senator Hilton.
Was anything he told me the truth?
My omega is crying inside. I turn to Harlow and say, “I’m going to the restroom.”
She nods. Too busy staring at the stage, wondering what’s going on.
“I won’t be long,” I say to Stanton, taking my purse and glancing once more at the stage to see the senator kissing his future daughter-in-law on the cheek. He hands her the envelope. I don’t know what he says to her. The blood thrashing in my ears drowns out every word.
I push out my chair and leave the table.
