He went on about some feud he had with their father's back in school. A feud he couldn’t even remember properly. They’d offered him up to ten times the worth of the chandelier, but he’d been adamant and unmovable about selling it to another construction company, JKS's only rival.
So how did she manage to get it, and how did she get it without paying a cent more than the value on the price tag?
They also didn’t like the way the guy, fucking Carl, looked at her. A little too familiar. Jake just barely stopped himself from breaking his nose, although he hadn’t completely wiped out the thought of actually doing it.
Any one of them, Marc or Evan, could do the same: walk past him, trip him, break his nose before he righted himself, and let him think it was all an accident. They had learned a lot during their stint in the military.
But again, how did she do it? And fuck, did she have to be so fucking perfect and still be Frank’s sister?
Their plan to get rid of her seemed to have failed right before their eyes. She wasn’t supposed to walk into Ali’s and procure the chandelier. They had banked on Ali, barring the doors on her the minute he knew who she worked for.
She was supposed to come back empty-handed and then cash the check they had given her and buy another food truck, and this time, they would make sure it was insured and posed no danger to her. They would do all that without her even knowing. But they were certainly never going to have to see her again.
Their balls couldn’t handle it.
“Nice, doing business with you, beautiful,” fucking Carl the driver said and high-fived Michelle.
They were not going to break his nose. They were not going to break his nose. They were not going to break...
Too late, as subtle as a whisper, Jake couldn’t help himself. He reached out and shook the guy’s hand hard enough that he winced in pain.
“You all right there, buddy?” Jake asked with fake concern before he put his hand on his shoulder, his thumb digging just a little too hard into his neck that almost had him buckling at his knees.
Their men had carefully stored the chandelier, but not without regard for the beauty beaming before them.
“Well,” she said before she rummaged in her bag again. “Guess I won’t be needing this. Not that I would have ever taken any money from you, just so you know. I have some pride left after my food truck blew up in flames.”
She stuffed the check into Marc’s jeans pocket and then stood back.
“What’s next?” She asked so brightly that he wouldn’t even be lying if he said the three of them could pump their dicks with their hands and come by just watching her smile.
What in the hell were they going to do with her now? But first, they needed to find out what deal with the devil she made that made it possible for her to buy them The Duchess, and they planned to find out every last detail.
Jake bent his knees, wrapped his arm around her thighs, and hoisted her over his shoulder, all with one hand and one smooth motion. She weighed next to nothing, but the heat from her body and the scent of her perfume heated his blood until an inferno exploded under his skin.
This girl was going to be the death of them.
“Jake put me down. I can walk,” she cried, banging the back of his thigh with her fist.
“We don’t have all day for you to get to the office in those heels or get killed by flying scaffolding if you had to walk on your own.”
Once inside the metal structure, Jake set her down on her feet, and she took a few moments to pull down her skirt. Not one of them could avoid looking at her silky thighs.
“How did you do it?” Marc asked.
“You gave me a task, and I executed it. It wasn’t easy, but I did it, and this proves not only am I resourceful, but I’m also smart and capable, and I’ll be an asset to your company.”
“Tell us everything,” Jake said, rubbing his jaw.
“You mean everything?”
“Everything,” Evan added, leaning against a desk with his arms folded.
“Well, I went to Ali’s Chandeliers, as you told me to, and I asked to purchase The Duchess, and they said okay.”
“How about you tell us the boring bits between the parts where you went to Ali’s and them agreeing to the sale?”
“Fine. If you must know, a salesman called Jerry refused to sell it to me despite my really begging him to let me buy it. He called security on me, then Carl, the driver, said he would escort me out, but he told me he would let me buy the chandelier, so I went with him to the warehouse in the dark, but he switched on the lights and showed me The Duchess, and it is beautiful. Wow. Hand-hung diamonds? Wow.
