“What?” Even if I find Elio and tell him to let my Nana go, if I tell him to take me hostage instead, he’ll probably just end up killing both of us.”
She thinks for a moment. “Are you okay if I talk to Vincent myself?”
“It will be useless. It’s not like he doesn’t know everything already.”
“It’s not enough just knowing, he needs to have a grasp of the predicament you’re in.” She pushes up from the couch. “I need to talk to him. I’ll see you when I get back.”
“Naomi—“
She raises her hand to stop me. “Not another word from you. I’m your best friend and we’re in this together. This is the least I can do for you.”
She disappears into the bedroom. When she reenters the living room, she’s wearing a pair of sweatpants and sweatshirt. She raises her hand to me. “Where’s your phone?”
I hesitantly pull it out from my back pocket and hand it to her. “What are you looking for?”
“His address,” she says. “I know you have it in here somewhere.” There’s complete silence the next couple of minutes, then she says, “Gotcha!”
She gives me back my phone and I see the location tracker app open on my phone. We both got the app and have shared our locations with each other since we were teenagers. I’d completely forgotten the app automatically keeps track of the places I’ve been. “You did not just do that.”
“I did.” She winks as me as she smiles. “Don’t go anywhere. I’ll be back as soon as I give that asshole a piece of my mind.”
She kisses Oreo and then leaves.
I finish my water and pad to the kitchen to clean my glass. I’m not hungry, but I have to eat for my baby’s sake so I make a chicken wrap for myself and give Oreo some dog food.
Sitting on the stool at the island, I begin to eat. I’m nearly done when I hear a pounding on the door.
Oreo runs to the living room, barking. Icy fear coats slithers down my spine. Naomi can’t be back yet and she wouldn’t be pounding on the door like that if she were. Maybe it’s Vincent or one of his brother’s?
My heart leaps to my throat. It has to be one of them, no one would be pounding on my door like that unless it was someone really angry.
I consider Elio, but he’s pretentious. He wouldn’t do that either.
Placing the used plates in the sink, I hurry to the door. The second the door opens, I see three men in suits scowling at me from outside. They’re twice my size and height, and they terrify me.
My heart explodes into a pounding rhythm that has vomit creeping up my throat. Oreo runs to my side, barking at the men. One of them glares at her with disgust. “Shut the fuck up, dog!” His command has the opposite effect as Oreo begins to bark even louder.
“W-who are you?” Dammit, I’m stuttering. I’ve never been so afraid as to stutter in front of anyone. “What do you want?”
The one glaring at Oreo turns his gaze to me, his eyes dark and filled with venom. He’s terrifying. And I can tell he’s the boss from the way the others are quiet behind him.
“The Boss asked us to bring you, Ms. Sullivan.” He flashes an ugly smile at me and my chest constricts.
I take a step back. “Who is your boss?”
He snarls, his smile fading into a frown. “You’ll find out when I take you to him.”
I need to think quickly. I can’t leave with him when no one knows someone is taking me. Even if I run, they’ll catch me before I can send a text to Naomi. But maybe I can leave a signal for her to know something happened?
“Can you give me a moment to get dressed?”
He scans me from head to toe and the look on his face says everything I need to know. He’s not buying my flimsy excuse. “You look good in what you’re wearing.”
I cringe. Now I’m getting compliments on my looks from a thug? Great! “At least allow me give my dog some water?”
He chuckles like he just escaped from an asylum. Everything about this man is wicked, even his laugh. He pulls a gun from his back and points it at Oreo.
Instinct kicks in and I step in front of Oreo, putting myself between her and this sick man. He’ll have to get through me to hurt her.
