“Don’t let them see you.”
With that, he made his way over to Billy’scar, climbing into the passenger seat in front. Pulling the car door closed, he restedhis hands on the open frame of the window as Billy climbedin.
“Are you okay?” Billy asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“I know it can be quite a challenge whenthey start to target people close to you,” Billy said.
Daniel turned to look toward Billy. In allhis years as a Reaper, he’d never had to deal with someonetargeting anyone closeto him.
“Has there been any othersuspicious activity? Anypurchases of multiple properties, land, anything?”
“Nothing. I consulted with Pete. Everythinghas been quiet. Everysummer we have rentals, and this one is the same as before. All therentals are taken up. We have a bunch of tourists just passingthrough, then others who are sticking around for the summer.Nothing is out of the ordinary.”
They parked across the street.
Daniel had heard the annoyance in Amy’svoice. She hadn’t been happy with closing.
“Do you think a guy who got rejected woulddo this?”
“Yeah, I do. There are a lot of assholes outthere.”
“Amy’s a good woman.”
“I know,” Daniel said. “And we’re not goingto let anything happen to her.” He wasn’t interested in makingsmall talk. They didn’t have to wait long for the truck toarrive. All he had to dowas wait for him to swing the truck around, pull out, and thenreverse right back.
“That’s him,” Billy said.
That was all Daniel needed. “Right, I wantus to drive out.” He pulled out his cell phone and sent a quicktext to Martha, asking her to let him know when the truck wasleaving. He got a smile emoji back as a response.
He and Billy drove out of town, going justpast where the food waste was dumped. They sat in silence, bothpreparing for the truck driver to arrive.
Nixon sent him a text to let him know thedriver had passed. Daniel had already received the first text whenthe driver was on the way through.
He waited, and sure enough, thethumbs-up emoji arrivedin his text inbox, and he and Billy pulled into the center of theroad, and waited.
They didn’t have to wait too long before thedriver stopped. He kept pressing his horn.
Daniel walked over to the driver’s side ofthe truck, opened thedoor, and smiled.
“You and I are going to have a littlechat.”
“I don’t know who the fuck you are, but getout of my way. I’ve got deliveries to make.”
Nixon and August, as well as seven more guys of The Reapers, surrounded the truck.
“Do not fuck with us. These men just had toclean up the food you left on the side of the roadback there. For your ownsafety, I suggest you get out of the fucking truck.”
He wasn’t in a playful mood.
He was ready to do business.
And it wasn’t going to be pretty.
Chapter Eight
Amy sat at the bar, nursing the samebeer she ordered whenshe arrived. She looked at Daniel and couldn’t help but notice hisbusted knuckles. They hadn’t been split or bruised this morning, yet they were now. She couldn’t help but think about what Marthahad said to her. Did it matter to her if he was aReaper?
