Kayla squeezes my hand, laughter spilling from her lips. She waves to the security officer as he nods to us and trails after his commanding officer. The only reason I don’t chase after the male is her soft grip grounding me. One touch and I am entirely hers.
“Are you sure?” Kayla asks. “This situation might not be resolved quickly. It could be a lifelong thing...”
I laugh and gently tuck my little mate under my arm.
“There’s nothing I want more,” I tell her. “Except maybe to hear you laugh. Wait, that’s a lie. I wouldn’t mind hearing you scream my name sometimes. A few moans would be nice too...”
“Jaraz!”
I smile down at her, unrepentant. I’ll find every way to make her smile. She’ll always be safe with me by her side. My job as a bodyguard is to protect her, but at the end of the day, she’s the only one I trust to guard my heart.

JARAZ
Ipress my hand against the door’s security panel, engaging the lock. Now no one can interrupt us. I plan to take my time with my mate, all night if I must.
Kayla looks around the room, steadily refusing to make eye contact with me. I breathe in deeply, smelling the slightly acidic tang in the air, all as a result of her fear. Now that we are alone, her nerves are growing.
“You have nothing to fear from me,” I tell her. I approach her slowly. Her eyes widen, tracking each of my steps. One step at a time, I get closer to her.
I shake my head when the scent of arousal fills the air. One moment she’s nervous and the next, she wants to mate?
“If you keep smelling like that, Kayla, I may be forced to mate with you.”
She grimaces, her teeth bared. “Yeah, let’s not use the words ‘force’ and ‘sex’ for a little while. I’m going to need some time to process what almost happened to me.”
I scowl. In a flash, my tail stiffens behind me, ready to spear towards the closest threat.
“You told me that Grum tried to silence you. What do you mean by that statement?” Did he attempt something else?
The bruises...
I feel sick.
“Did he?”
“No! Thank God!” Kayla hurries to assure me. She steps closer, placing her hand on my arm. It’s cool against my skin, a soothing balm to the anger roaring through me.
“It’s just hard to learn that so many humans, especially females, don’t fare so well out here in space. It’s a bit to process,” she tells me.
“Not all females struggle,” I say. “Many, if not most, find good males to become their mates.”
“Like you?” She asks, a soft smile on her lips.
“We aren’t mates,” I say.
She blinks, and I see the moment when my words register and become painful.
“Not yet, I mean,” I am quick to wrap my tail around her leg, stopping her from fleeing in this moment. “You smell like me because you did that amazing thing with your hands the other day. But technically, I’ve never entered your body. I haven’t fully claimed you.”
“Oh,” Kayla’s lips purse as she thinks. “I did think it was strange we didn’t... you know, fully have sex.”
“I want to,” I assure her.
Kayla laughs. “Way to make it awkward and put me on the spot! Don’t you know a girl likes to be wined and dined first?”
