With Daryl’s claws at Sam’s throat, Morgan was helpless to stop this. No matter what happened, Sam would never blame his mate for not saving him. Morgan was stuck in an impossible position, Daryl leaving them with no options.
“I love you so much,” Sam sobbed. “Whatever happens, I want you to know that I’m thankful to have met you and been a part of your life.”
Anguish filled Morgan’s eyes before he roared, rushing forward so fast that Sam tried to turn sideways to avoid the massive freight train bearing down on him, but Daryl still had a hold on him.
Before Morgan reached them, Daryl screamed, and then his claws vanished from Sam’s throat. Above Sam’s head, it sounded like bones were snapping, and then the tight grip on his hair loosened.
“No one fucks with my family,” Kellen’s voice was dark and deadly behind Sam.
Morgan had stopped, but now he rushed forward, eating up the distance as his face twisted into a mask of rage.
Sam shouted and jerked backward just as Morgan rushed past him. His mate’s massive form slammed into Daryl, sending the guy flying backward before he crashed into a wall in the kitchen.
Rotating in a circle, Sam saw Kellen standing just inside the kitchen.
“I told you I had your back,” Kellen said.
Morgan pummeled Daryl, his arms tight to his body like a professional boxer going savage on a punching bag. Sam had never seen so much rage before.
Suddenly, Morgan backed away, shaking his head from side to side as if trying to dislodge something from it while Daryl lay dead at his feet.
“Give him a second,” Kellen said to Sam.
“What’s wrong with him?” All Sam wanted to do was run to his mate, to feel those strong arms wrapped around him. Alarm filled him as Morgan staggered backward, gripping the top of the refrigerator to stop himself from losing his balance.
“He’s back in his underground fighting days, Sam. He fought as a human, but his bear always had full control over him, looking for other threats. If you go near him now, Morgan won’t know who you are and he’ll kill you.”
Sam shot forward, ducking around Kellen’s outstretched hand to clearly stop him. Sam launched himself at Morgan, and his mate turned in time to catch him.
“Morgan!” Sam cried out as he slung his arms around his mate’s shoulders.
Morgan crushed Sam tightly to him as a deep snarl tore from his throat.
Sam wrapped his legs tightly around Morgan’s waist, unwilling to let go. He pressed Morgan’s head to his chest as his mate kept inhaling deeply. Sam knew he was breathing in the smell of a warm ocean breeze.
“Never seen him come out of it so fast.” Kellen looked impressed. “You tamed his beast.”
“With me, he’ll always be the tamest bear.” Sam pulled Morgan’s head up and sealed their lips, pouring all his love into their kiss as Morgan spun, plastering Sam against the wall, growling softly into his mouth.
A monster had sent Sam running, but it was the love of a polar bear who’d caught him and never let him go.
