Morgan’s gaze snapped to Sam’s. “There’s more to my world, Sam. Lots more.”
“Nope.” Sam shook his head. “For now, keep it to yourself.”
When Morgan grinned, Sam’s heart felt as if it started beating again.
“Are you really willing to give this a try?”
“I might need a mental evaluation, but yeah.”
Morgan leaned over and hugged Sam, the squeeze gentle. “I knew in my gut that you were a strong man. You’ve survived too much not to be.”
There were a lot of times when Sam hadn’t felt strong, times when he wanted to break down and cry, but he’d always found a way to push forward.
“Find Daryl Radmore and stop him,” Sam said as he gave Morgan the address. “I don’t want to keep running from him.”
Morgan’s features darkened. “You can count on it. I promised I wouldn’t arrest him, and I’m not. I’m going to end him.”
Sam shook his head as his eyes widened. “No going to the dark side right now, Morgan!”
The guy chuckled. “With you, I’m the tamest bear.”
“Not too tame,” Sam said. “Now, how much longer before I can get out of here?”
Morgan rested his forehead against Sam’s. “Not soon enough.”
Chapter Eleven
Morgan sat there watching Sam sleep. After the life he’d led, Morgan didn’t deserve him. His mate had been handed one shitty deal after another, but he’d still made the best of his circumstances.
There was nothing he wouldn’t do for Sam. In such a short period of time, the human had come to mean everything to him. It was as if Morgan had just existed until he’d found Sam.
He tucked the cover over his mate’s chest and walked quietly from the room. Morgan spotted Dr. Baldwin looking at a chart by the nurses’ station and headed for him.
“I need a favor.”
Dr. Baldwin looked at him. “You know his attacker’s name and now you want to go after him.”
The last thing Morgan wanted to do was leave Sam’s side, but he needed to put an end to this. “Can you watch over Sam while I’m gone?”
“Yes,” Dr. Baldwin said.
“No.” Morgan shook his head. “I mean really watch him, Doc. If that fucking hyena decides to show up here, I need to know you’ll protect my mate with your life.”
“That’s what our kind do,” Dr. Baldwin said. “No one is getting past me.”
After Morgan shook his hand, he headed for the exit, and then walked to the cruiser Sheriff Harper had left for him in the parking lot.
As soon as he was inside, Morgan called his boss. “I have a name and an address. I want this to go down now.”
“I’ll direct every available man to the location,” Dominic said.
“There’s not going to be an arrest,” Morgan ground out. “I’m going to watch the life bleed from his soulless eyes.”
After he gave Dominic the information, Morgan pulled from the parking space, careful not to speed from the hospital. Once he was on the main street, Morgan headed right for Daryl’s house, feeling that old part of him return.
The part of him that had killed mercilessly with his bare hands, that hadn’t hesitated to inflict as much damage as possible on those who’d deserved it.
Morgan wasn’t so far removed from his past that he’d forgotten who he’d once been.
