“Tell me why you wanted to be cuffed at the hospital.”

“He was there,” Sam whispered.

“And at the station?”

His mate nodded.

Which meant the person was tracking Sam. His mate’s strange behavior made sense now.

Morgan hoped he could find the person from the cameras at the station. The guy would have followed them from the hospital, because his mate had wanted to be hauled inside the police station like a criminal. Then Sam had ducked down when they were leaving to come to Morgan’s house.

“Thank you for telling me.” A warm smile spread across Morgan’s face as he gazed at Sam.

“I basically told you nothing since I didn’t give you a name.” Sam pressed a hand into his side as he took a shuddering breath. “I really think I need to lie down.”

“Did you take your pain meds?”

Sam shook his head. “I was trying to tough it out. People get addicted to those things.”

“Lie down.” Morgan stood. “I’m going to get your bottle and make you something to eat so you’re not taking them on an empty stomach.”

The only thing Morgan wanted to do was take away his mate’s pain and then hunt. When he went upstairs, he pulled out his phone and called Dominic.

“How is your mate feeling?”

“Being stubborn about taking his medication.” Morgan grabbed the bottle off the nightstand. “But I know more about what happened to him.” After he told his boss, Morgan said, “Check the footage from yesterday when I arrived with Sam, and then when we left. The bastard followed us, Dominic.”

“Is the guy at your house now?”

“I don’t know if he’s lurking around since Sam is tight-lipped about who it is. My mate is so goddamn afraid of the bastard that he made me promise not to arrest him.”

“And you promised,” Dominic surmised.

“Yeah, so we’re not going to arrest him. I want to find out who he is then have him followed. My gut tells me that Sam isn’t the first guy he’s befriended and lured to his house.”

“I’ll put Cannon and Wyatt on this. The sooner we get the guy off the street, the sooner Midnight Falls will be that much safer.” Dominic hung up.

Morgan was dying to look over the footage himself, but he didn’t want to leave Sam alone. Now would be a good time for him to tell his boss that he was taking his two-week honeymoon period. It was normally used to deepen the bond between mates, but Morgan would be using it to keep Sam safe.

After tucking his phone into his pocket, Morgan went downstairs and made Sam some eggs and toast. When he returned to the living room, he smelled blood.

Setting the plate and pill bottle aside, Morgan touched his mate’s arm. “Sam?”

The guy groaned but didn’t open his eyes. As carefully as he could, Morgan turned Sam to his side and lifted his shirt. Some of the stitches were bleeding.

Sam had done too much this morning and clearly pulled too hard on the sutures.

Morgan got up and found the papers with the doctor’s office number on them. When he called, a receptionist answered. “Dr. Baldwin’s office.”

“This is Deputy Savani. I need to talk to Dr. Baldwin right away.”

If Morgan had to throw around his title to get the doctor on the phone, he would.

“One moment please.”

Morgan paced the kitchen then stopped and strummed his fingers on the counter, wondering how long it took to answer a damn phone.

“Dr. Baldwin.”
