Yet … why am I bothered by it at the same time?

“I’m glad you understand,” I say.

Without a word, she grabs her suitcase and heads into the bathroom. I had our suitcases brought to the room before the wedding because I knew we’d want to change out of our clothes. But I thought I’d be changing out of my clothes by getting naked with Lara.

Clearly, that’s not going to happen tonight.

I sigh and take off my jacket and shirt and shoes. This is not how I planned on tonight going. I was going to show Lara a good time. I know she’s a little afraid of me. I wanted to make it clear she didn’t have to be by giving her a ton of orgasms. That’s one thing I’m good at with women—sex. I’ve always asked women for feedback, emphasizing honesty, and they’ve given it to me. It’s what has helped me become so good at reading women during sex.

Unfortunately, that skill only applies to sex and not other areas of my life. Reading Lara is hard. She acts shy one minute and disobedient the next. There’s something simmering under her surface, and I’m not sure if I like it or not. I can’t risk any consequences right now. My focus is on taking my father down, and that’s it. I can’t be distracted by my very beautiful and confusing new wife.

Lara comes back into the room wearing a simple white nightgown that hugs her body perfectly. My cock stands to attention at the sight of her. Too bad I won’t be finding the release I’d expected to get.

Lara doesn’t look at me as she dives under the covers of the bed.

Standing in front of her, I slip off my pants and change into a comfier pair of sweats. I don’t hide away like she did. If she wants to look, she can.

I glance at her and see her eyes quickly look away. So, she did peek. Good. That means Lara isn’t completely without any sexual attraction.

“You can look if you want,” I tell her.

She doesn’t reply.

I walk over to the bed and lie down. She’s facing away from me. “You don’t need to be afraid of me, Lara.”

“How can I not be?”

I frown. “What do you mean? What have I done to you that’s so scary?”

“I saw you beat up a man. That was scary.”

I honestly forgot about that. Once I deal with a problem, I move on from it. No use spending more energy on something than I need to. “I’m sorry you had to see that. You weren’t supposed to.”

She glances at me over her shoulder. “Do you really want to protect me?”

“I do.” That’s one thing I can say confidently. “You’re my family now. And I protect my family.”

“You’ll never pressure me to have sex again?”

“You think I was pressuring you?”

She shrugs. “Yes.” She rolls onto her back, giving me a view of the swell of her breasts. God, I want to fuck her. It’s painful that I can’t.

“I didn’t mean to,” I tell her. “I was just confused. I’ve never had a woman turn me down for sex before.”

“Have you ever been with a virgin?”

“Not since I was a teenager. It’s been over a decade.”

“Maybe you’ve forgotten how nerve racking your first time can be. Especially when you barely know the person.” Her hands are resting on her stomach, and all I can think about is the spot right below there.

“We’re not strangers anymore, Lara. We’re married.”

She slowly shakes her head and looks me straight in the eye. “We’re strangers, Rocco. You know we are. You don’t know anything about me. You’ve never even asked.”

“I didn’t think it was important.”

She flinches. “That right there. You say things without thinking how they might affect me.”
