“Hey, do you have a sweatshirt?” she asked.

“Yeah, sure,” I said, wondering if she was cold. I pulled one out of the closet. It was from my college and all faded.

“Thanks,” she said, pulling it over her head.

I joined her on the couch, and we gazed at each other for a moment. I looked away first, feeling nervous for some reason.

“You seem to be feeling better. I think the cupcakes were a success,” I said.

“Definitely,” she said through a yawn. “Do you mind if I take a quick nap?”

“No, go for it,” I said as she snuggled down and pulled up the couch pillow to lay her head on.

Tenley curled her feet up and closed her eyes. I covered up her legs with a blanket and she cracked one eye open.

“Thanks,” she said.

“You’re welcome.”

While Tenley slept, I tried to be as quiet as I could, picking up the apartment and cleaning the bathroom. She had completely crashed, so I sat on the couch next to her and scanned through my digital to-read list. Feeling a little naughty, I opened an extremely sexy age-gap romance set in a sex club that I’d been saving for a while. Tenley might have been asleep, but there was something fun about reading something so explicit with her right there. My body started to sweat and I could feel my cheeks heating up.

The blogger who recommended this book hadn’t been lying about how sexy it was.

“What are you reading over there?” a voice said, and I almost screamed and simultaneously fell off the couch.

“Holy shit, Tenley,” I said, putting my phone down and trying to get my heart rate back under control. “You scared me.”

I looked over to find her with her eyes open and a sleepy expression on her face.

“How long have you been watching me, creep?”

She rolled her eyes and sat up. “I wasn’t watching you. I woke up and you happened to be in my line of sight.” I didn’t exactly believe her, but I wasn’t going to argue.

“So, what are you reading?” she asked, and my face went completely red.

“Nothing,” I said.

“Uh huh,” she said, stretching her arms over her head. She was still wearing my sweatshirt.

“I should probably get home,” she said, running her fingers through her messy hair. “I’ve crashed with you long enough.”

“It hasn’t been that bad,” I said. “I mean, the crying was a little intense, but that’s not your fault. Anyone would be upset after a breakup. At least you didn’t break the law or set anything on fire.”

Tenley snorted as she stood up. “Don’t think I didn’t consider it. But if I burned down Shane’s house then he’d be able to get the insurance money and I don’t want that.”

“And there’s the getting caught part,” I said.

Tenley gave me a wicked smile. “I wouldn’t get caught.”

She gathered the clothes she’d shown up to my house in and I put them in a bag for her.

“I’ll wash this and give it back to you,” she said.

“Take your time. Do you need some shoes?” I asked. Our feet weren’t the same size, but I had some flip-flops that sort of worked that she put on.

“I know I’ve said it before, but seriously, Mia. Thank you. I don’t take any of this lightly. You were there for me last night,” she said as we stood together in the doorway.

“You’re welcome, Tenley,” I said, and she leaned closer to me just a little bit. Her lips parted as if she wanted to say something else.
