"I'm not questioning Chin, Sir. I'm questioning why you've chosen to not send Brody with Chin. Or Brody with Jenson, which is what you've done for nearly every case in the past five years." My shoulders bristled with his side-stepped answers.

"I urge you, Agent Donovan, to not question my decision." He clapped me on the shoulder, then nodded toward the door. "If you'll excuse me, I have to meet with Director Coleman. I trust you'll have your team at the ready when I return."

"Yes, Sir." I drew in a breath riddled with fire but kept a cap on it as always.

I watched him leave, then turned back to the crew at the table. Roderick engaged Chin, the two of them sharing experiences briefly. His eyes bugged out when she disclosed that she once interviewed David Berkowitz during her tenure in New York.

My gaze wandered to Nora only to find her looking right at me. Her brow crinkled and she glanced to the door, her shoulders lifting in a shrug. I shook my head, mirroring her sentiment and mouthing, "No idea."

Her expression blanched and she tried to hide a gulp before Jenson dragged her attention back to the tablet they shared.

"Roderick, Chin, Taylor, let's go." I clapped my hands an inch from Roderick's ear. "Boots up, noobs. We've got places to be."

Roderick shoved my shoulder and scowled.

"Yes, Ma'am," piped Chin, her stern brow smoothing with seriousness.

They followed me out like three well-behaved ducklings, and I led them down the hall to my office.
