“Hey, Andrea. Hope you’re ready, because we’ll be on our way to pick you up soon,” Tanya says, her voice cheerful yet urgent.
I nod, even though she can’t see me. “See you soon,” I reply, a sense of anticipation building in the pit of my stomach.
With a final farewell, Tanya ends the call, leaving me alone with my thoughts once again. I leave my coding work behind, and I head back to my room and hurriedly get ready.

As I stand at Jeremy’s engagement party, I try my best to blend into the background with Josh and avoid any unnecessary interaction with the man of the hour. I can feel my heart sinking lower with each passing moment.
Then, I spot Sarah across the room, and my heart leaps with joy at the sight of my childhood friend. With a smile spreading across my face, I make my way over to her, feeling a sense of relief wash over me as I draw closer.
“Sarah!” I call out, my voice filled with excitement.
She turns towards me, her eyes lighting up with recognition as she catches sight of me. “Andrea! Oh my gosh, it’s been forever!” she exclaims, her voice filled with genuine delight.
I wrap her in a warm hug, feeling the weight of years of separation melt away in the comfort of her embrace. “I know, right? I’ve missed you so much,” I admit, a hint of nostalgia creeping into my voice.
We start to chat, the memories come flooding back, each one more vivid than the last. We reminisce about our childhood adventures, laughing as we recall the mischief we used to get into.
“Do you remember that time we tried to sneak into the old, abandoned house at the end of your street?” Sarah asks, a mischievous twinkle in her eye.
I nod, a fond smile playing at the corners of my lips. “How could I forget? We thought we were so brave, but we ended up running away screaming as soon as we heard a noise,” I reply, laughter bubbling up from deep within me.
Sarah chuckles, her laughter mingling with mine as we relive the moment together. “Good times,” she murmurs, her voice tinged with nostalgia.
As we continue to chat, another familiar face walks up to the bar, bringing with it a sense of warmth and familiarity that I hadn’t realized I was missing.
“Hey, Andrea, Sarah, mind if I join you guys?” It’s Alex, another old friend from school.
I smile warmly at him, gesturing for him to take a seat. “Of course, Alex. It’s great to see you,” I reply, genuinely happy to have him join us.
He leans into the bar between us, the conversation flows easily between us, each topic more lighthearted than the last. We reminisce about our favorite teachers, our most embarrassing moments, and all the silly inside jokes that used to make us laugh.
“Do you guys remember Mr. Thompson’s chemistry class?” Alex asks, a mischievous glint in his eye.
Sarah and I exchange a knowing glance, a shared smirk spreading across our faces. “How could we forget? That explosion was legendary,” I reply, a hint of amusement in my voice.
As we laugh, I can feel the anxiety of the evening melting away like ice under the warmth of the sun. For the first time all night, I feel truly at ease, my worries and insecurities fading into the background as I lose myself in the comfort of old friendships.
In this moment, I find myself surrounded by laughter, each moment a reminder of the enduring bonds that have shaped my life. With Sarah and Alex by my side, I remember that these people could still be my friends after all these years.
And as I look around at the smiling faces, I can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the friendship and support that surrounds me.
As Tanya approaches us, her smile bright and infectious, I can’t help but smile at her arrival.
“Hey, guys! Mind if I join you?” she asks, her voice filled with warmth and genuine interest.
Sarah and Alex welcome her, stepping aside to make room for her at the bar. “Of course, Tanya! It’s great to see you,” Sarah replies, her tone friendly and inviting.
As Tanya steps up beside me, the conversation picks up right where it left off, each topic more animated than the last. We laugh and reminisce together, swapping stories and sharing memories as if no time has passed at all.
“So, Alex was just telling us about his huge crush on you back in high school,” Sarah teases, a playful smirk playing at the corners of her lips.
Alex’s cheeks flush with embarrassment, but he laughs along with the rest of us, his eyes twinkling with amusement. “Yeah, I may have had a bit of a thing for you back in the day,” he admits, his voice laced with self-deprecating humor.
Tanya chuckles, a fond smile spreading across her face. “Oh, really? I never would’ve guessed,” she teases, her tone light and playful.
We continue to chat and laugh together. The topic inevitably turns to Jeremy and his fiancée. Sarah wrinkles her nose in distaste, her eyes narrowing with suspicion.
