He slides the pad of his thumb over my bottom lip. “It seems you doubt my feelings for you, love.”
I’m caught in the raw need in his eyes and suck in a sharp breath. My body reacts immediately. Heat coils between my legs and my nipples bead into diamond points I’m sure he can feel through his clothing.
“Hmm.” His voice purrs through my chest. I squeak as he presses his hips into me, crushing his hardening cock against my abdomen. “I’ll have to show you until there is no trace of doubt in your mind.”
He eases the tip of his thumb into my mouth, presses down onto my lower teeth. My lips close over his thumb and I suck. His pupils dilate until only a ring of color remains. Against me, his cock throbs. His groan is sin drawn straight from the fiery pits of hell.
Who said hell was a bad place?
With a groan like that, I could put down roots and happily spend the rest of my days in that inferno. The sound of the office behind me filters into my consciousness. People moving about. Seeing us in his office. I stiffen, knowing that anyone could look in.
He leans across me and closes the door, locks it. Presses the button that closes the blinds shielding us from the office and now the only thing I hear is my own labored breathing.
“Does that make you feel better, love?” He steers me backwards, prowling over me, filling my senses with him. His scent. His focus. His intent. “Do you doubt me? Do you think you’re not the most important person in my life? Do you think I would allow a woman like Samantha to come between us?” The backs of my thighs bump his desk. I lean backwards over the expensive hardwood as he towers over me.
“I will move heaven and earth for you. I will allow nothing to come between us.” He puts his knuckle under my chin, his thumb denting my lower lip. “If you think any of those things, then I’ll try harder. I’ll keep trying until there is no room for doubt in your mind, because you are that important, Adeline. You’re so important to me that this is the last thing I give you.”
Paper flutters as he lets my chin go. David hands me an official looking document. “Read it.”
Confusion sweeps through my buzzing arousal. I take the paper, reading it awkwardly because David still has me cinched between his desk and his thighs.
I recognise the logo of his lawyers on the top right of the page. A frown tightens my brow as I read. My frown becomes an all-out body sweat by the time my eyes have drifted down the page. I read it again to make sure. The second read through says I didn’t imagine the words. They’re still there, unchanged, stark in black and white.
“Is this true?” I need to make sure I’m not suddenly living a parallel life.
My gaze flies back to David, taking in the heat in his eyes, the triumph on his face. “Max signed it when he sold his developments.”
“Is it legal?” I say.
“It’s not only legal, but it’s everything you’re owed by him. All back payments. His share of living expenses for you. Food. Clothing. Your share of his holdings. You’ll also see your mother’s alimony payments rendered in full, plus her share of his previous holdings. I had everything finalized from the sale before he declares bankruptcy, which he will do probably as soon as business opens tomorrow when he finds out what I’ve done,” David says.
The paper trembles in my hand. A jack hammer has started up in place of my heart. The number at the bottom of the page blurs. “I…”
I’ve slid into another dimension. I look up from the paper, see the windows overlooking New York, the carpet beneath my feet. I splay my hand on David’s chest as his heart pounds beneath my touch. His skin is hot through his clothing.
“Feel’s real,” I murmur.
“I assure you, it is very real,” David says.
I blink away tears that make my vision swim. My lungs compact, knowing what David has done. For me.
Mom will be safe.
She will have enough pain meds.
We won’t be homeless.
We’ll have enough to eat.
We can buy new clothes.
We can go on a vacation. Hell, we can go anywhere in the world with the amount printed right there in bold, black ink. There’s enough money to do whatever we want to do.
“I…” I choke. Words embed in my throat.
He draws a fingertip down my cheek. “I won’t give you anything else. Not another penny. You’re on your own now, love.”
I blink back tears and reclaim my vision. “What?”
