I lean over and kiss her head. “You did it. You did it, Hannah.”
She clenches my hand again and screams.
“Hannah?” I ask. “Is she okay?”
“The second baby isn’t waiting for anyone.”
“So soon?” I ask before I cringe in pain as Hannah pinches off my circulation and screams again.
More cries fill the room, and Hannah falls back against the bed. She looks spent, and I’m staring at the nurse who is taking a second baby to be cleaned up.
“Boys or girls?” I ask, looking at Hannah.
“Surprise.” She smiles, slightly high from the drugs they’ve given her for the pain.
“While we finish up with your wife, why don’t you go with your sons, Mr. Milov.”
“Sons?” I say, still confused.
“Yes, sir, you have twin boys.”
I stare at the doctor, and then I kiss Hannah deeply. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” she breathes.
I follow the nurses to the nursery and watch as they wash up my children, weigh them, and measure them. We had not gotten far enough with choosing names but now that I see them I have some ideas.
Although I don’t feel ready for twins.
They look like they’re in good hands, so I decide to go to update my family waiting in the waiting area. I walk there in disbelief.
Kervyn stands up and walks to me. “And?”
“Twin boys,” I say, looking up at him. He suddenly seems older than he is, as though parenting has worn him out.
He smiles brightly and hugs me. “Congratulations, Luka.”
Danil laughs. “Twins boys! Can you believe it? And I thought we were crazy for trying for a second baby so soon.”
“Yeah.” I look between them and shake my head. “I can’t do this. I can’t have twins.”
“You’re going to be fine, don’t listen to Danil,” Kervyn says, shooting Danil a look. “Arseny will be back shortly; you can give him the news, too. He’s gone to fetch Mama.”
“Twins, Kervyn. That’s double the trouble. Like two mini-mes that are going to be so handsome, how will the ladies ever resist them.” I smile. “Twins!”
“Any idea of the names?” Danil asks, trying to get me to focus.
“We discussed naming one boy Kiran Johnathan. KJ for short.”
“KJ Milov has a nice ring to it, but now, what are you going to do about the second.” Kervyn leans against the reception desk.
“If Hannah agrees, I’ll name him Pierrick after Dad and Kervyn after you. So PK.”
“You have a thing with abbreviations. It’s kind of creepy,” Arseny says as he walks in.
“Mama.” I go to her. “I have twins.”
“I know, Hannah told me. It’s why I’m here, to help my poor daughter-in-law.” She smiles and holds my face in her hands. “We had twins on my side of the family; it skips a generation.”
