When we’re done, I pay for the clothes and have an assistant carry the bags to my car. I tip her, and then we get in. I’m about to start the car when my phone rings. I answer it when I see it’s Kervyn.
“Yes?”
“You need to come down to the club. We need to discuss the threat.” Kervyn says before he hangs up.
I look at Hannah. “We need to make a pit stop at my brother's club if you don’t mind.” I smile as she smiles at me and shakes her head.
“No, I don’t mind. I’d like to see the club.” She straps herself in, and I follow suit.
I pull into traffic in the opposite direction of our house and drive to Afantasy.
I park in my usual spot, and as I climb out, I see the detectives standing outside the club. I go to Hannah. “Let me handle this. They like to harass.”
She takes my hand and walks beside me. I lead her toward the door of Afantasy when the detectives approach us, but Danil comes out before I can do anything. “Get going. I’ve called our lawyer about harassment charges.”
The detectives give us a sour look before they leave. I smile gratefully at my brother, who nods and smiles at Hannah. “Hello, Hannah. The girls are downstairs. Let me show you to them, and you can at least have someone to talk to while we discuss business.”
“Okay,” Hannah says, letting go of my hand and following Danil.
I go upstairs and walk into Kervyn’s office. “The fun has arrived.”
Kervyn is standing at the front, looking down into the club. “Hannah is looking perkier.”
“I think I’m finally winning her over.”
“Luka, the Armenians are definitely siding with the Italians. Both sides are hitting our local spots. We need to figure out what is uniting them against us so we can drive a wedge between them.” He turns to look at me. “I know you’ve been busy with Hannah, but you still need to work.”
I frown. “I have been working.”
“Those reports I sent you this morning, you looked at them?” He raises an eyebrow.
“I had to go to the races. That’s part of working.” I feel shamed and look away.
“I’m just saying we still need to pull our weight, or our great family will crumble. Look at them. Let me know what you think. We need to figure this out.” He goes to sit down. “So you say you’re winning her over?”
“I don’t know what else to do, though, to win her over. I’ve tried to show her I’m not just a dangerous man and that there are other things I do.”
“Why don’t you plan a special day for the two of you? I do that for Penny every other week. Something relaxing where you can get to know each other?”
“Yeah, maybe,” I say. “Maybe Asher can help me plan it.”
Kervyn nods. “Good boy, now don’t fuck this up. It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to you.”
I smile. “I’ll do my best.”
Danil comes in and looks at us. “I’m going to take Asher home. Mama says Jade has a temperature. Might be teething.”
Kervyn stands up. “I’m also not staying. I promised Penny we’d spend time together tonight.”
I chuckle. “You’re like a bunch of married hens.”
“So are you,” Danil points out, ruffling my hair as I walk past. I swat him away and fixed my hair.
We go downstairs and find the three girls chatting in the VIP section while they drink sodas.
Hannah gets up when she sees me and says goodbye to the girls before walking over to me. I smile at her and kiss her head. “Let’s go home.”
She takes my hand, and I lead her back to the car, ready to go home and relax.
