“Yes, she’s a few weeks pregnant. Congratulations, Mr. Milov.” He pats my shoulder. “I need to go do some other checkups. I’ll check in on your wife later on.”
“She’s pregnant,” I say, still in shock. “Fuck, after everything that’s happened.”
“What do you mean everything that’s happened? What’s going on?” Kervyn asks.
“Her sister was kidnapped by the Pachecos,” I say, looking up at him. “They wanted information in exchange for her life.”
I smile brightly. “She’s pregnant. I’m going to be a father.”
Kervyn grabs my arm. “Focus Danil. Is she the one who betrayed us?”
“She felt like she had no option,” I say defensively. “Come on, Kervyn, like you haven’t made a few mistakes.”
“She cost us millions,” Kervyn growls.
I get my back up. “She’s pregnant with your niece or nephew.”
He looks into my eyes, and I don’t blink. He finally lets go of my arm. “Fine, but you better not let this get out.”
“Deal,” I say quietly.
“I suppose I can’t talk. I forced Penny to marry me when I found out she was pregnant.” He sighs. “What did she say when you confronted her?”
“I offered her a divorce this morning,” I comment, and I can see the disapproval in his eyes. “Don’t look at me like that. She didn’t love me.”
“And now? You think she’s going to love you because of the baby?” he asks.
“I’m not giving her an option. That’s my flesh and blood,” I say. “And I’m sure you’ll back me on that since we don’t really do divorce in this family. Now, if you’ll excuse me. I need to pop out and get balloons and chocolates and a teddy bear and maybe some flowers.”
My mind has done a one-eighty, and adrenaline is flooding my system like I’m under fire. I’ve never felt like this in my life.
“I never took you for a hopeless romantic, Danil. Go. I’ll keep watch over her and call if anything changes.” He moves toward Renat. “You stay with me.”
I step outside and get in my car. I first make a quick stop at the laundromat because the last thing I want is to get caught with two bags of money.
Then I go to a nearby gift shop and buy everything I can fit in my arms before I pack it into my car. When I get back, I make Renat help me offload the car and stack it around her in her room.
“I have to go,” Kervyn says, putting his cell phone away. “Penny is at the club with Sammy. She doesn’t know about Asher, and I don’t want to tell her over the phone.”
“I’ll let you know once she wakes up,” I say, getting myself settled in the chair next to her bed. “Obviously, I’ll need Luka to cover for me today.”
“I’ll arrange it, don’t worry,” Kervyn says. “Just make sure she’s okay, or Penny will kill me.”
I nod and sit forward, holding Asher’s hand. I’m never going to let it go again.
Chapter 24 - Asher
I feel like I’ve been hit by a dump truck. I’m disorientated and scared because I can’t remember where I am or what happened. My body and head hurt. Then I hear his voice through the haze, and it’s like music to my ears.
“It’s okay. I’ve got you. I’m here for you.”
Danil’s voice is soft and caring, not at all cold like he had been at breakfast. How long ago was that?
“What…” I try to speak, but my throat is dry. “Water.”
I feel a straw press against my lips and open my mouth to capture it.
“Slowly, now,” Danil says. “One sip at a time. There you go.”
