She gives me a soft smile. “He’s fine,” she answers simply, so I don’t push the subject.
I pull the sheets back on the bed, nodding toward it to urge her forward. She walks to me and climbs in, and then takes my hand to pull me down beside her. I go easily, happy to curl around her all night.
With one hand in hers, I reach over with the other and flick off the light on the bedside table. Then I settle in beside Prudence, still as a corpse and worried I’ll scare her off somehow. But after a silent moment, she turns and scoots closer into my side, resting her head on my chest where I’m sure she can hear the pounding rhythm of my heart.
“We’ll be okay, right, Griffin?” she whispers as I rub my hand over her back.
I don’t know if she means her and I after my mess at the party, or if she means in the grand scheme of things with the threat to our lives, but either way, I make a promise to her right this very second. I press my lips to her head and give a gentle nod, and then whisper back, “Yeah, little flame. We’ll be okay.”
Just as soon as we find a way to kill every last member of The Celestials.
