They both got up and went to the kitchen. Elena began to hand Cat the sandwich makings from the refrigerator. Cat set them on the island and turned to Elena. “Bread?”
“Right here,” Elena replied, reaching into a cabinet on the other side of the refrigerator.
“Let’s create a masterpiece,” Cat said.
“You are serious about sandwiches.”
“I am. That’s another little weirdness about me. You know when you order a burger or a sandwich and they pile it so high you can’t get your mouth around it? I hate that,” Cat said as she took four pieces of bread out of the package and set two slices on each plate that Elena pushed in front of her.
“How are you supposed to take the perfect bite and taste all the toppings?”
“Exactly,” Cat said, pointing a knife at Elena. “You get it.”
Elena grinned. “Mustard or mayo?”
Cat tilted her head. “Both.”
Elena chuckled. “My kind of gal.” She took the lids off the jars and scooted them towards Cat.
Cat began to build her sandwich while Elena worked on hers across the island.
“This is fun,” Cat said, looking up at Elena.
“I’m glad you’re here. I always see you at the bookstore and this is a nice change.”
“I guess you’re right. Except, we were at Cory’s bar last night.”
“Why haven’t we gone to dinner or to a movie or something?”
Cat shrugged. “We’re having dinner now.”
Elena chuckled. “How about we halve our sandwiches and share?”
Cat gazed at the ingredients spread out on the island. “I don’t see any onions. I don’t care for them.”
“Huh, I don’t either. What are you making?”
“Turkey, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and avocado,” Cat replied.
“I have salami, cheese, pickles, and lettuce,” Elena said.
“I’m in, let’s halve them.”
Elena reached into a drawer and brought out a knife to cut the sandwiches when the doorbell rang. “Here you go. Be right back.” She handed Cat the knife and went to the door.
Cat looked up as Elena opened the door. In walked a very good-looking man who stopped as soon as he saw Cat.
“Oh, no. I’m interrupting,” he said.
“The first time I have a woman over and you pop in!” Elena exclaimed.
Cat saw the shock on the man’s face then heard Elena laughing beside him.
“You should see your face! Gotcha!” Elena said.
“Oh, you! That was not funny,” the man said, giving Elena a menacing look.
“Cat, this is Nicolas,” Elena said, pulling him over to the island.
