“There were no kids involved here. When I made the decision to go into surgery I knew I couldn’t be a good mother and follow the career path I wanted. So I decided not to have kids.”

Melanie nodded. “What about you, CeCe? Do you want to have kids?”

“And you talk about me being nosy, babe,” Krista said.

“It’s okay. We’re all getting to know each other, right?” She looked over at Alexis and smiled. “I had a pregnancy scare a long time ago. Believe me, no kid deserved this mess as a mother.” She waved her hand in a circle in front of her. “It did make me take a hard look at myself and what I wanted.”

“And?” Krista urged.

“Let’s just say it put an end to hook-ups in the back rooms of beauty salons,” CeCe said.

“Uh huh! What is it about sex in the workplace?” Krista asked.

“Is that what it is?” CeCe chuckled.

“Oh, I think there’s a forbidden, secretive, let’s-don’t-get-caught aspect to it,” Melanie offered.

“I guess,” Alexis said with a smile. “But I think you’re leaving something out.”

“What’s that?” Krista asked.

“It’s fun!” Alexis exclaimed looking over at CeCe.

CeCe laughed. “Yeah, it is.”

“Well, duh! Of course it’s fun.” Melanie laughed.

“That’s enough questions for now,” Krista said.

They both chuckled and sipped their near empty drinks.

Melanie took them back to CeCe’s car and led them to their cabin. CeCe and Alexis dropped their bags inside as Melanie gave them a quick tour.

“You have your own private little beach over here,” Melanie said, pointing to the sandy area that met the water not far from where they stood.

“Oh, wow,” Alexis said. “That’s so inviting.”

Melanie turned towards them both and smiled warmly. “I hope our questions didn’t offend either of you. We like you both and I think we see a little of ourselves in you. We weren’t together when we were your age, but that doesn’t mean we weren’t in love with each other.”

CeCe’s eyebrows shot up her forehead. “You weren’t together?”

“No.” Melanie sighed. “It’s a long story, but what’s important is that we’re together now and nothing will ever come between us.” Melanie smiled and turned to leave. “We’ll meet you at the restaurant around six.”

“We’ll see you then,” Alexis replied.

As they walked back to the cabin, CeCe bumped her shoulder into Alexis's. “I can’t imagine them ever being apart.”

“Me either.”

Once inside the cabin, CeCe walked over to the refrigerator and took out two beers. When she closed the door Alexis was standing in front of her. CeCe gave her the sweetest smile and draped her arms over Alexis's shoulders with a beer in each hand.

“Can I be honest?”

Alexis smiled and rested her hands on CeCe’s hips. “Always.”

“Part of me wants to take our clothes off, skip the party, and not leave this cabin until they make us,” CeCe said with a devilish smile.
