All of my powers were gone.
It hit me as Dorran nosedived toward me and wrapped me in his arms.
I’d given up my powers to save Toby.
Chapter Fifty
Dorran
My dragon hated it when she did that. It made my heart hammer in my throat.
Why in the Hell had she jumped?
Once I caught her, she didn’t even respond to the glare I gave her on the ride back to the mountain. Toby and Sasha stood on the porch of the cabin with worried stares. Amara moved her feet and gestured for me to let her down.
She bent at her waist, braced her palms on her knees, and took deep breaths.
“Amara,” I hissed. “What the hell was that—,”
She stood up with tears rolling down her cheeks. “I gave up my powers to save Toby. I don’t have them anymore.”
Oh God ...
Toby’s face contorted into shock and then guilt. Sasha covered her mouth with her palm, while Amara wiped the tears from her face.
“Are you sure?” I asked, stepping forward and interlacing my fingers on the back of her neck. “You’re sure—,”
“I’m positive,” she said, her bright blue eyes full of tears. “They’re gone.”
This was the first time in my life that I didn’t have a clear thing to say. Toby stepped off the porch and walked over.
The unspoken words between them were heavy.
Apologetic.
Grateful.
Toby pulled her in for a tight hug, and she rested her head against his shoulder. He looked over to me, and for the first time since I’d known Toby, I saw him cry.
“Thank you, Amara. I’ll never be able to repay you.”."
She pulled away from him. “You’re welcome.”
Toby sunk his fingers into his hair and sighed deeply. “I can’t believe this is happening.”
Amara lost eye contact with him and pointed forward. “I need to use the restroom.”
My heart broke as she hurried into the cabin.
My dragon wanted to chase her, hold her, and make her whole again, but I had no way of doing so. She’d given up her powers to save my best friend. How we would get them back was a mystery, and one I wasn’t sure we needed to delve into.
The magic you were born with was God-given.
Magic you had to obtain would lead you down a road not worth taking.
Toby turned to me. “I’m so sorry this happened..”
“I need to go check on her. You know she’s happy that she chose you over her powers. She's just sad that she's missing a part of herself."
