Emerald? Yeah, it’s gorgeous. But I thought your favorite color is blue.
It used to be.
Can you do me a favor actually?
Yeah, sure.
I think I left my toothbrush charger in the bathroom, should be on the counter. Can you check?
I haven’t left my charger; it’s here and tucked in my suitcase.
What. In. The. World?
My phone starts buzzing. I’m in the locker room with about ten minutes before we head out for pre-game warm-up, but Coach Burrows can ream me out; I’m taking the call.
“Hi,” I say, trying to sound casual.
“There’s no charger here, but there is the entire range of La Mer sitting on your bathroom counter. No wait, there’s two of everything. Shit, there’s thousands of dollars’ worth here.”
I tuck the phone between my ear and shoulder, lacing up my skates.
“Is it the same stuff they used last night at the spa?”
There’s a pause. “Wait, this is for me?”
I chuckle. “Of course it is. Apparently, you loved it, so I just thought, you know, early Christmas present.”
“Jon, I can’t accept this. You’ve spent way too much money you don’t need to spend on me.”
“Just accept the gift, Felicity. I know you don’t care about money but honestly, it’s not about that for me either. Just let me treat you, spoil my girlfriend. Make you smile.”
Another pause. “I honestly don’t know what to say.”
“You don’t need to say anything,” I reply, shifting my phone across as I start on my other skate.
“Well, thank you. Hey, wait, don’t you have a game in like five minutes?”
I check the clock above the locker room door.
“Four minutes to warm-up but yeah, I gotta head off.”
I then remember Jack’s game earlier today. They were playing Washington, the league leaders. “How did Jack’s game go?”
“Two a piece, not a bad result against Washington, I guess.”
I’ll say. I thought it might be a loss but glad they held out.“How did he play? Did he start?”
“Nah, but he did get much more ice time. Got an assist for the second and his overall game was strong.”
Amazing. “Perfect. He’s making progress. It’ll take time to break into the starting line. He’s a freshman.”
“Yeah, true. I’m so freakin’ proud. He was buzzing after the game. I grabbed a late lunch with him.”
My heart warms at the thought of her spending time with her son. “What are you up to now?” I ask as the guys start heading out of the locker room and to the ice.
“Just gonna chill I think, might make a dent in your freezer.”
I laugh, thoughts of Felicity curled up on my couch with a tub of ice cream leave me a pining mess. Fucking away series. I don’t like to think of her alone.
