My next bite was a little more aggressive.

The call had paid off, thankfully. Selena explained that the line was only to be used for emergencies, and she hadn’t even been sure that he’d taken the phone with him, but after two attempts, Marcus answered.

Selena had pulled on every emotional string in her arsenal to get through to her father and assured him countless times that she was safe and not in the hands of Andrés.

Then he’d agreed to meet with her.

Finally.

He was due to call back in a day or so with a place and time, and we would be there for her. Knowing precisely what Marcus stole would be vital in building a case against Andrés, one that would stick.

I just hoped Selena would be able to get through to him when they met face to face.

Halfway through my next bite, raised voices drew my attention back to Trask. He was pulling a man from the vehicle, and a scantily clad woman climbed out the passenger side, waving her hands. Her thick curls bounced as she yelled at the driver to shut the hell up, and despite the height of her heels, her speed as she darted around the car was unmatched.

Great.

Burrito sadly abandoned, I climbed from the car with one hand resting on my belt and approached the stop.

“Hey. Hey! Everyone, just calm down,” I called as the raised voices verged on breaking the sound barrier. “Trask, what’s going on?”

Trask shoved the man against the car, pulling one arm up his back and snapping cuffs on him.

“Hey. watch the suit, buddy!” the man snapped.

“Trask!” I called, demanding his attention.

“Sorry boss. I was just giving this idiot a ticket for his broken light, and he admitted that he was paying this woman for sex,” Trask explained.

“So not true!” the woman snapped, turning to me and pointing at me with a long, manicured finger. “The pig is lying!”

“It’s all on the body cam, sweetheart,” Officer Trask smirked. “Try again.”

I rolled my eyes and reached out for the woman as her wild eyes took on the desire to bolt. Keeping my grip light but firm, I moved her away from the car.

“Can you step over here with me, Ma’am? Just over here, thank you.”

“Will this delay cost me extra?” The man called over as he was arrested. “I already paid for an hour, and we didn’t even kiss! You better not be scamming me!”

“Shut the hell up!” The woman spun back to her customer and surged forward, but my grip kept her from going too far.

As she struggled, yelling curses at the man, the sleeve of her blouse slipped, revealing a small tattoo I recognized immediately. It was black ink in the shape of an A and D looped together around a vial filled with green.

I pulled the woman to the sidewalk and then released her.

“Hey, calm down, okay? I’m going to have to call another unit because something tells me you won’t sit quietly in the back of my car with him, will you?” I quirked a brow.

She sucked on her teeth, looking me up and down before shrugging. “I didn’t do anything wrong. That guy was just…”

“Just what?” I asked. “You two don’t seem like friends.”

“I was hitchhiking.” she retorted. “Is that illegal?”

“No. But we both know that isn’t true and if you want to argue it, you can argue with him and the body cam footage in court.” I glanced over my shoulder to Trask, who was reading his suspect his rights on the way to the car. “Trask! Call in another unit and a tow for the car.”

“Yes sir!”

“What’s your name?” I asked when I turned back to the woman.
