Tears warmed behind my eyes and a static sensation flushed through my nose. “Oh my god. So what—what are you doing to do? Are you going to work with Jay?”
“Not quite,” Tyler smirked. “We’re moving to Homicide.”
“Fuck sake.” I rolled my eyes and gently kicked at Tyler while elbowing Bailey. “How is that safer?”
They both laughed and surged up. Warm hands turned to prodding fingers, and I squealed loudly as they set about tickling me everywhere they could reach.
“Okay it’s safer, it’s safer!” I yelled, fighting a losing battle.
It lasted until Jay finally climbed from the pool with a tired-out Dae, who was grinning from ear to ear.
“Can we get ice cream?” Dae asked, wiping water from his eyes.
“Sure kiddo,” Bailey grinned.
The thought of sweet, milky ice cream turned my gut sour though and I grimaced. “Oh, that thought makes me ill.” Then a sudden craving cut through my giggles. “I wouldn’t say no to a juicy steak though, oh my god. Can we go out for lunch?”
“It’s settled then,” Jay decided. Bailey, you can drop Selena off to see her father while I get Dae cleaned and sorted, and then we can meet up after for lunch. How does that sound?”
“But ice cream!” Dae demanded.
“Ice cream after!” Jay scooped Dae up into his arms. “Ice cream for dessert.”
“I’ll come with you,” Tyler said to Bailey. “I haven’t seen Marcus since that first time.”
“Sounds good.”
Both Bailey and Tyler kindly helped me up from the lounger and as we walked inside, one hand automatically went to my belly.
Life, somehow, was good. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever consider a house and a man—not one but three—who adored the hell out of me. Who knew that the absolute worst thing to ever happen to me would end up bringing me the best things in my life—more than I ever could have dreamed of.
Just that thought was enough to bring the lingering tears forward and I tried to hastily wipe them away, but Tyler noticed.
“Hey!” He darted up to me and caught my wrist, then cupped my cheek. “What’s wrong? Are you okay? Is it the baby?”
“I’m okay,” I replied softly. “I’m just… I’m just happy and right now that makes me cry so I’m just, y’know. A sopping mess.”
“Oh love.” Tyler chuckled warmly and kissed me on the mouth, lingering for a few seconds. “I love you,” he said as he pulled away. “You deserve this happiness.”
“I love you too,” Bailey yelled from the kitchen somewhere.
“I love you more!” Jay called from the bedrooms.
“No I do!” Dae screeched. “I love you the mostest!”
Laughter bubbled up, and there was no stopping the tears this time.
“I love you too. All of you. I do.” My heart flooded with warmth.
My life was more full of light and love than it had ever been.
This was the future I deserved.
