“Yes,” Jay replied.

“And you saw the shooter?”

“I did, yes.”

“Can you point him out to the court? So there is no doubt.”

“Absolutely. It was him. The defendant.” Jay pointed across to Andrés, whose face was utter thunder. Never had I been more satisfied to see that. Suddenly, movement at the corner of my eye caught my attention as someone in a grey jacket suddenly stood and slipped from the courtroom with their phone pressed to their ear.

Given the intensity of the case and the fact that no phones were allowed, that was suspicious.

I followed them, slipping out of the courtroom and hurrying after him. He half ran down the hall but luckily didn’t go very far. Ducking into an alcove next to the water fountain, he huddled over, talking hurriedly. I slipped closer on my tiptoes.

“—what the fuck is going on?” he hissed. “Where is the kid? What do you mean they found him?!” He dragged a hand through his hair and growled. “Fine, you tell me what fucking car he’s in. Jay had his chance. I’m sending a car and you will guide them along the route, understand me? Andrés wants that kid dea?—.”

I reacted without any thought. The fire extinguisher next to me on the wall made the perfect impromptu weapon and I snatched it up, swung it, and cracked it across the man’s head before he could finish that threat. He crumpled to the floor, and his phone skidded from his hand, sliding to a stop at my feet.

“Shit,” I gasped, my heart hammering in my chest. Leaning over, I gently nudged him with my shoe. He didn’t move. “Fuck!”

The buzzing voice from the discarded phone caught my attention. Slowly, I crouched down and picked it up, then my heart jumped. The name Trask was displayed across the screen.

“Hello? The fuck does he want me to do,” Trask hissed. “Soon as I make a move they’ll know!”

Muting the call, I unmuted the tablet and glanced down. Tyler was talking to a SWAT member.

“Tyler?” I gasped, leaning against the wall as my mind ran.

“Selena? What’s wrong? You sound upset.”

“I just a… if I hit someone over the head with a fire extinguisher, will I get into trouble?”

“What’s going on? What’s happening?” Tyler demanded, joined quickly by Bailey.

“What’s wrong?” he asked.

“There was a guy—Jay, he didn’t lie and confess and the moment he blamed Andrés, this guy ran from the room and was talking about tracking Dae down and making sure they killed him so I just— I just reacted and hit him with the fire extinguisher.”

“That’s my girl,” Bailey snorted. “You need to get security and the Captain.”

“That’s not all.” I swallowed hard around the taste of iron. “I saw who he was on the phone to.”

“Who?” asked Tyler.

“Trask.”

“That son of a bitch. I knew he wasn’t as fucking innocent as he claimed.”

“Where the hell is Trask?” Bailey spoke off-screen. “The fucker isn’t here, is he?”

“No,” Tyler replied. “Maybe he’s got a friend here, or he’ll rely on the protocol of a situation like this.”

“Okay, Selena?” Bailey re-appeared. “Thank you for this. We’ll take care of?—.”

“Selena?!”

My head whipped up in surprise and warmth flooded my cheeks as Captain Aubrey came hurrying toward me flanked by two security guards. “Selena, what’s going on?”

“I—.” Suddenly, an unexpected swarm of guilt erupted in my chest. “He was calling Trask, telling him to kill Dae and I just… reacted.”
