The security light above the single entrance lit the concrete walkway.
“I’ll meet you there. What does Al say?”
The dog rumbled as they stopped by the door.
“He doesn’t like it either.” Nevaeh reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out the keys Branson had given them for the outbuilding. “I’m going to check it out.”
“Stay on coms the whole way.”
“Yeah.”
Nevaeh shoved the key into the slot and turned. The lock moved with the motion like it should.
The door had still been locked. Should mean no one was inside.
But the noise…
She slowly turned the knob, then pushed the door in as she shifted to the side of the open doorway. She pulled her Sig and checked the angle to the left first.
A dark interior stared back at her.
“If you’re in there, you’d better throw down your weapon and come out. I’m armed and have a protection K-9.”
Silence met her warning.
She shifted to the left and peered into the right side of the building. Using her flashlight would make her a better target, so she kept it pocketed.
Her eyes started to adjust to the dim lighting enough to see a parked tractor, a tiller, and shovels leaning up against the wall.
Alvarez wasn’t growling, but his body was tense and ready.
If she remembered correctly, the light switch was to the right of the door.
She took a breath and ducked inside.
Al stuck with her as they darted to the right of the door, and she flicked the switch.
Light illuminated the rectangular building.
She kept her Sig raised as she took it all in.
No one moved among the machines, landscaping equipment, and storage containers.
Shelves lined the entire left wall, holding boxes and big lidded tubs.
“Looks clear so far.” Nevaeh gave the report to Jazz as she started forward. Someone could still be hiding in the remaining shadows.
“Okay.”
Alvarez swung his head toward the open door behind and let out a low growl.
Nevaeh’s muscles tensed.
“We’re coming up to the door now.”
Nevaeh chuckled and relaxed her stance. “Yeah. Al just told me.”
The dog swished his tail as he recognized his friends silhouetted in the doorway, the security light bright behind the slim redhead and her K-9.
