Lucy had had enough of Caroline’s meanness. She smiled sweetly and said, “You are the one who is making a fool of herself. Everyone knows that you have a thing for Micah but that he isn’t interested in you. If he was, he would have asked you to the event.”

Caroline gasped.

“If you think that there is something between you and Micah, then you should talk to him about that. It is between you two. Otherwise, you should toddle off and find yourself another man.”

“You’re nothing more than a money-hungry grub,” Caroline snarled.

Lucy smiled and shook her head. Micah appeared behind her and reached for her hand.

He glared at Caroline and asked, “What’s going on?”

“Nothing,” Lucy said. “Caroline was just sharing some of her views with me.”

“I’ll bet she was,” Micah said. “Let’s dance.”

He escorted Lucy to the dance floor. The entire time, Lucy felt Caroline’s eyes burning holes in her back. Lucy’s gut told her that she needed to be careful. Caroline wasn’t a nice person and people like that tended to be dangerous when someone stood in the way of something they wanted.

“You would think that someone would invent some kind of spray to keep annoying people away,” Micah said. “Do you think that some Raid would work?”

“It would likely work, but that would be mean. I’m sure she’ll figure things out eventually. I feel sorry for her.”

“Why?”

“Because she isn’t able to see the world beyond herself. She’s missing out on so much,” Lucy said.

“You are a sweet and generous woman,” Micah said.

He pulled her close to him. Lucy knew that it was dangerous, but she just let herself feel the incredible emotions of falling in love with this gorgeous, sweet man.

Micah

“Everything is starting to wind down. I think that we can make our escape now if you are ready to go home,” Micah said.

“I’m ready,” Lucy replied.

“We’ll say our goodbyes to Angie and Noah and slip out.”

Five minutes later, they were settled in Micah’s truck, heading home.

“Did you have fun?” he asked.

“I did. Our clan had its annual celebration that was a lot like that at home. It was fun getting to know everyone,” Lucy said. “I won one of the silent auctions.”

“What did you get?”

“A home spa kit, with bath salts, bubble bath, a loofah, lotion, and a couple other things.”

“Awesome. All of those baskets were donated, so a hundred percent of the proceeds go to the sanctuary,” Micah said. “The people who run the sanctuary are amazing. They take in abused, dumped, and hard-to-adopt animals. They are a no-kill shelter.”

“I love that idea. When everything settles down, I’ll check them out and find myself a fur baby.”

Vera, Michelle, and Ronnie had left the party an hour earlier, so the house was quiet. Micah held Lucy’s hand as they walked up the stairs. He didn’t want to let her go. He led her to his bedroom and shut the door.

Micah touched her face gently and kissed her. Heat rose between them as the kiss intensified. Their breaths mingled as the kiss told of an intense hunger they had for each other.

He unzipped her dress and it fell into a pool at her feet. She stepped out of it. Lucy pulled off his tuxedo jacket and tossed it to the chair. She deftly unbuttoned his shirt and sent it flying across the room to join the jacket. Lucy picked up her dress and dropped it into the chair.
