“Taking care of my business.”
“I was playing golf at the country club yesterday afternoon. George wanted to know who the woman was living in your house and why,” Gavin said.
“George is free to come ask me himself if he really wants to know,” Micah said. “However, the last time I checked, George does not pay my bills. What I do or who lives in my house is not his business.”
“I told him that she was just hired help. He mentioned that Lucy looked pregnant and everyone was saying that the baby was yours. I told him that she was pregnant and the babies were yours,” Gavin said. “A look of pure disgust came over his face.”
“Not a me problem,” Micah said.
“You are making a laughing stock out of yourself, and you are ruining your professional and personal reputation. If you don’t make that whore move out of your house, and take her bastard children with her, you will end up losing everything that you’ve worked so hard for,” Gavin said.
“No one, but you, cares who lives in my house with me. The people who care about me support my decision. And before you say anything else about Lucy, you should know that she’s my fated mate, and I’m going to ask her to go through the mating ceremony with me. If you choose not to be a part of our lives, that’s on you. As a matter of fact, we are all better off without you being in our lives.”
“How dare you?” he asked. “I’m trying to help you and protect you. I’m not going to sit around and watch you ruin your life.”
“I’m a thirty-five-year-old man. I built this company from the ground up without any kind of help from you. I’m quite capable of taking care of myself and my life.”
“Be that as it may, I’m still your father and it’s still my job to take care of you and help you with your problems,” Gavin said quietly and left.
Micah called Ronnie and said, “Dad was just here. He’s likely going to try to talk to Lucy again. Can you make sure that he doesn’t get in the house?”
“Absolutely,” Ronnie said.
Rubbing his temples, Micah tried to figure out what in the world his father might plan on doing. He’d already tried bribing Lucy. Caroline tried poisoning her. Between the two of them, they’d put the household on full alert.
His watch beeped at him. Sighing heavily, Micah grabbed his briefcase.
“Martha, I have a meeting with Peter Holmes. I’ll be back as quick as I can.”
Peter was a large, jovial man with a perpetual red face and no hair.
“Micah, great to see you,” he said, reaching out to shake Micah’s hand.
“You, too, Peter,” Micah replied.
“I understand that congratulations are in order,” Peter said. “Word is that you’re going to be a father.”
“I am,” Micah said. “Lucy and I are having twins. We’re pretty excited. How did you know?”
“Your father was talking about at the golf course yesterday,” Peter said. “It’s obvious that he’s less than enthused right now, but he’ll feel better about it after the babies are born.”
He’s never going to go near my children, Micah thought.
Plastering on a smile, he said, “I’m sure. That’s the way it always works. Let’s talk about that land you were looking at.”
“It’s been around for a while, hasn’t it?” Peter asked.
“It has.”
“I’ve heard that it was cursed by one of the Apache tribes from the area when the land was being stolen from them,” Peter said. “Anyone who tried to do anything with the land would suffer.”
“That’s the legend,” Micah said.
“Do you believe in the curse?” Peter asked.
“Well, to be honest, there have been several people who have suffered misfortunes when they’ve tried to build on the land. You might be able to break the curse.”
Peter pursed his lips and steepled his fingers. “Do you have the environmental tests and other schematics?”
