She almost fainted with relief when she saw Micah. Lucy could tell by the look on his face that Ronnie had told him about Gavin’s visit.

Micah kissed her on the cheek and sat on the bench across from her. He reached for her hands and kissed each one.

“I understand you had a visitor today.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“He suggested that I was bad for you and your image. Apparently, he thinks that the baby doesn’t even belong to you, and I was trying to trap you into taking care of it and me. He offered me a blank check if I would leave.”

“That bastard,” Micah growled. “I’m going to wring his miserable neck.”

“I’m a little worried,” Lucy said. “I think he threatened me. He said that I was going to regret not leaving.”

“I’m so sorry,” Micah said.

He stood up.

“Where are you going?”

“To put a man in his rightful place,” Micah replied.

Lucy hung her head. She knew that this wasn’t her fault, but she felt responsible anyway. Looking around, she sighed. Lucy felt as though the world was closing in on her.

Micah

Micah pounded loudly on the front door of his parents’ house. Rose opened the door.

“What in the world?” she asked.

“Where is Dad?”

“Out back,” Rose said. “What is going on?”

Micah stormed past his mother and headed for the backyard. His father was sitting in a lounge chair, drinking a beer.

“What in the fuck did you think you were doing?” Micah growled. He was almost nose-to-nose with his father.

“You need to back up, boy,” Gavin said.

“I’m not going to back up. You and I are going to have a discussion.”

“So, your floozy told you about our little chat, huh?” Gavin said. He hadn’t moved, pretending to be relaxed in the lounge chair.

“Explain yourself.”

“I merely suggested that she wasn’t doing you any favors by living in that house with you. I offered her an incentive to go back home.”

“You said that the baby wasn’t mine.”

“I might have said something like that,” Gavin replied.

“The baby is mine. I purposely got her pregnant. I want Lucy and I want the baby.”

“You are going to ruin your life,” Gavin snarled.
