His mother, Rose, brought him a couple maple-glazed donuts topped with bacon, which was his favorite.

“What’s the bribe for?”

“Information.”

“You want to know about Lucy.”

“Yeah. Your father is about to lose his mind over the fact that you have a woman living in your mansion and you won’t tell him about her.”

Micah sighed and sat back in his chair, taking a bite of the donut.

“You have to tell me now. You accepted the bribe.”

“I met Lucy at the fertility clinic. I hired her to be a surrogate. I am ready to start a family and I didn’t want to adopt, at least not yet. I wasn’t dating anyone, so I thought this would be a good option.”

Rose’s jaw dropped and her eyes got wide. She put her fingers to her mouth and gasped. “I’m going to be a grandma?”

“Hopefully,” Micah said.

“Is Lucy going to be a part of the baby’s life?”

“Yes. Lucy is a wonderful woman and we’ve become good friends. She’ll make a great auntie. She has already threatened to spoil the baby and then send it back home.”

“Lucy sounds perfect. I would love to meet her,” Rose said.

“I’ll ask her. She might not be comfortable with the situation yet. After all, she and I aren’t a couple.”

“Ask her for me, please,” Rose said.

“I will,” Micah promised. “Please don’t tell Dad about this. He is such a close-minded prig.”

“I won’t. I can only imagine how he would react.”

Micah texted Lucy. My mother wants to meet you. She’s really cool, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to.

His phone blinged a minute later.

Sure.

Can I give her your number?

Yes.

Rose was delighted. “I’ll see if she can have lunch with me tomorrow.” She pointed her finger at Micah. “You aren’t invited.”

“That hurts my feelings.” He stuck out his bottom lip and put on a sad face.

“I really doubt if your feelings are hurt, so don’t even try.”

After Rose left, Micah thought about Lucy. She had said they weren’t in a relationship. Micah thought that he might want to be, though.

Lucy waited anxiously for Rose to come pick her up.

Vera smiled and patted her on the back. “It’ll be fun. Rose is an amazing person. I don’t think there is a nicer person on Earth – besides yours truly, of course.”
