“I won’t forget,” Sofia assured her, a smile finally breaking through. “And we wouldn’t miss your wedding for the world. Italy, huh? It’s bound to be the event of the century.” With a final embrace, Sofia bid us goodbye.
Carmela returned to my side, a thoughtful look on her face. “I bet Miguel isn’t dealing with her leaving at all.”
Massimo let out a heavy sigh, the kind that held more than just air. “He’s keeping his feelings locked up tight, but it’s clear he’s fallen for her.”
A natural curiosity bubbled up within me. “Is there a reason they’re not together? It’s obvious there’s something between them.”
“Their worlds,” Massimo explained, his voice laced with a hint of resignation. “She’s the second in command to a Mafia legacy. He’s the leader of a prominent gang. Their paths are tangled in obligations that make it complicated.”
“If it were me,” I said firmly, pulling Carmela closer, my arms wrapping around her, “nothing would keep me from the woman I love. No duty, no distance, no difference in our worlds.”
Massimo nodded. “Well, let’s get down to business, and then we can sort out the details of your wedding.”
