There was a rush of noise behind him.
Coulter, Marie, and I crowded into the back seat. Dante jumped into the front, and Knight took off in reverse, slamming the car through the back fence.
Glancing backwards, I saw some of the guards rushing out of the kitchen door. David appeared, and stood on the doorstep, smiling at us as some of Nero’s men raced by him. I recognized a few other men standing back, just like him, while the rest ran towards the car.
David gave me a wave goodbye, and I smiled in return.
I looked up at Coulter. He was staring at me. Just staring. Then, leaning down, he kissed the top of my head.
I tucked myself into his side, listening to his heart. Pounding, pounding.
Just like mine was, afraid my luck was going to run out soon.
