“About the surgery?” he asked, disbelief evident in his voice.

Sniffling, I nodded. “I want to think about it for a while,” I lied. Truth was, right now, I didn’t want them to know. I didn’t want anyone pressuring me. “I don’t want to get their hopes up.”

Halt softly growled in displeasure. “You're lying to me, Noah. I know you—remember that.”

Another tear streaked down my cheek just as I thought I was done crying. “Fine,” I bit out. “I don’t want them to force me to do it.” I drew in a deep breath. “I’m scared.” I stepped back from him and swiped at my tear-stained cheeks.

Halt tucked my hair behind my ears before cupping my damp cheeks, resting his forehead on mine. “They would never force you. What are you scared of?”

I wished I could see him—just him.

“The world not being as beautiful as I imagine it to be,” I whispered.
