“Uh…yeah?”
“No! You’re not that special.”
He frowns. “Yes, I am.”
“Oh my gosh.” I playfully push his shoulder.
That makes him smile. Then he shakes his head and says, “So I didn’t make fun of you and you didn’t get me fired from the sequel…Are you telling me all this bickering between us is because of a misunderstanding?”
“Two misunderstandings,” I correct.
“That’s crazy.”
“You’re crazy.”
“You’re the drama queen.”
I lift my chin. “Yes, I am.”
He shakes his head again and laughs. Then he frowns. “I’m sorry for the misunderstanding. I understand now why you were so cold to me. It must have hurt to think I was making fun of you.”
I fold my arms over my chest. “Yes, it did.”
“I truly am sorry, Mia.”
“Apology accepted. And I’m sorry for…wait a sec. I didn’t do anything wrong. It’s not my fault you assumed I got you kicked from the sequel. That’s all on you.”
He opens his mouth to refute, but then he snaps his mouth shut. “I guess you’re right.”
I raise my chin again.
“Hey, wait a second. I have nothing to apologize for, either,” he argues. “It’s not my fault you assumed I made fun of you.”
“Hmm. I guess you’re right, too.”
He holds out his hand with a shy smile that makes him look far too cute for his own good. “Are we good?”
I slide my hand in his and nearly jerk away when a spark shoots up my arm. “Yeah, we’re good. Now you can finally play a decent William.”
“Me? You’re the one who was causing all the drama during rehearsal.”
“I told you that I’m a professional.”
“Sure you are. You—”
“Wait, shh…” I strain my ears. “Do you hear anything?”
He strains his ears, too. “I don’t think so.”
“I’m going to peek out. Save me if they try to kidnap me.”
We both stand, and I take a hesitant step toward the door. I press my ear against it to hear any voices, but I don’t hear anything. I motion Declan, one, two, three, and then peek my head out. I slam it back shut. “No one’s there.”
“Nice! Let’s make a run for it.”
“Wait.” I grab his arm before he reaches for the doorknob. “They know what you look like. You probably won’t make it out of the store alive.”
He scowls. “Good point. This disguise is useless.” He kicks away his cap that sits on his backpack.
