“You said you’re living your parents’ life again.”
“Oh. I was referring to you, a movie star, coming to Edenbury High just like my dad did. My mom missed the assembly, but she was forced to tutor him.” I shake my head in total disbelief. “This is too weird.”
“Come on, Declan!” someone yells. “Please come out!”
“Why aren’t the employees getting rid of them?” I grumble.
“Maybe they’re scared of the mob?” Declan asks.
“This is insane.”
“I know.”
“We’d better not stay trapped in here for hours like my parents were. Think we can order a pizza?” I hold up my phone. “I would kill for pizza right now.”
“I think they would kill the delivery person,” he jokes.
That makes me laugh. “Totally.”
We sit in total silence now. I reach for another cookie and munch on it slowly, since I have no idea how long I’ll be here and should probably savor it. I can still hear the crowd out there, but it doesn’t sound as loud as before. Maybe people are finally giving up and leaving?
“Why did you think I would make fun of you?” he suddenly asks.
My eyes flit to his. “What?”
“Back in the game store. When you were excited about your mouse. I thought it was really cute how happy you were. I miss that feeling, you know? That pure bliss you get from a game. I guess ever since I got into acting, I’ve been stressed.”
Did he call me cute?
“Mia?”
I blink. Then I lower my eyes to the dirty floor I’m forced to sit on. “I thought you thought I was a loser or something and were making fun of me.”
“I don’t think you’re a loser. And I would never make fun of you.”
“Are you serious? It wouldn’t be the first time.”
He just stares at me. “What on Earth are you talking about?”
“The Beat of My Heart? You know, when you and your bros made fun of me for destroying the set after…” My cheeks flame. “Well, I don’t have to spell it out, do I?”
“Wait, wait, wait.” He shifts in his spot so he faces me. But I’m kind of avoiding his eyes. “Mia, can you please explain to me what you’re talking about? Because I have no idea what’s going on.”
With my cheeks still burning, I narrow my eyes at him. “I can’t believe you don’t even remember. You know that scene we had to do? Where my lips were forced to meet yours?”
His cheeks are also pink. “Yeah…”
“And do you remember how I had a bit of an oopsie and destroyed the set?”
His brows shoot up. “I wouldn’t say you destroyed the set…”
“Really, now? That’s not what you told your friends.”
“Mia, what are you talking about?”
I tear my eyes from him and huff. “What I’m talking about is you and your friends making fun of me behind my back.”
“When did I do that?”
