We don’t say anything as he follows me to the door. But before he steps out, he turns to me. “Your parents are really nice.”

I fold my arms over my chest. “And you’re wondering how they birthed such a witch?”

His mouth falls open. “Why do you always assume I’ll say something negative?” He holds up his hand. “You know, never mind. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

He gets in his car and drives off.

Chapter Fifteen

Declan

I grab the container of food from the passenger seat of my car and get out. All I’ve been thinking since the short drive from Mia’s house was how odd this evening was. From doing all right with running lines with Mia (for the most part) to having dinner with Mia and her family…I honestly thought Asher Park would kick me out of his house. But they were so nice. And the food? I can still taste how delicious it was. And they were very kind to send some dinner home for Chase.

I think Mia and I are in a good place now in terms of the play. In terms of our relationship? I don’t think she and I will ever be friends. But we both want the same thing—to put on a good show. And once that’s done, we’ll stay out of each other’s way.

She still thinks I wanted to kill her during PE today, but I guess no matter how many times I tell her it was an accident, she’ll still believe whatever she wants to believe. Whatever, it’s not like I can control her mind.

“What’s that smell?” Chase asks when I enter the kitchen. His head is buried in the freezer, most likely searching for something to eat.

I wave the container at him. “Got some dinner for you.”

He shuts the freezer as he eyes the container. “The Parks sent leftovers?”

“Yeah.” I hold it out to him. “Enjoy.”

His eyebrows furrow as he accepts it from me. “That was nice of them.”

I lean against the wall, crossing my arms over my chest. “Yeah, it was. They’re nice people. I had a good time eating dinner with them.”

Though Mia was mostly quiet. Was she angry I got along well with her parents?

Why did I get along with them? It’s because of Asher that I wasn’t asked back for the sequel, yet he talked to me like I was just a normal person.

Chase warms up his food, then sits down at the table to eat. I chuckle as he practically gobbles the food down. Yep, been a while since he had a homemade meal and he’s enjoying every single bite.

“This is amazing,” he says with a stuffed face. “Make sure to thank the Parks for me.”

“Already did.”

“And thanks for bringing it to me.”

I wave my hand. “Was no big. You do so much for me, so the least I could do is give you good food.”

He laughs. “We should probably learn to cook.”

I join in his laughter. “Last time you tried that, you nearly burned down your apartment.”

“And the last time you tried to cook, you almost chopped off your fingers.”

I scoff. It was two years ago and I saw a trending cooking video on Spill It! and I wanted to try it out. Let’s just say knives and I should not mix.

“Yeah. I think we both need to stay out of the kitchen,” I tell him. I reach for my backpack that I threw on the floor. “I’ve got a lot of homework, so I’ll see you later.”

“Deck, wait a sec.”

I turn around.

He takes a sip from his water. “Tori called me this afternoon. She said something went wrong during play rehearsal.”
